Kenya Cancels Major Deals with Adani Group in Energy, Aviation Sectors
Following the indictment of Gautam Adani in New York for his involvement in an alleged multibillion-dollar bribery and fraud scheme, the Kenyan government has withdrawn from its agreements with the Adani Group concerning airport and energy projects. President William Ruto of Kenya announced the cancellation of the procurement processes for the modernization of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and a partnership with a state-owned electricity service. This decision came to light a few hours after reports surfaced about Adani's legal troubles, as per AFP's findings.
President Ruto, in a recent address to the nation, emphasized that the termination of these projects was prompted by "new information" from Kenya's investigative bodies and international partners, though he did not specifically mention the United States. He stated, “In the face of undisputed evidence or credible information on corruption, I will not hesitate to take decisive action," underscoring his commitment to integrity in government dealings. This stance reflects the Kenyan leader's resolve to combat corruption, even when it involves high-profile international agreements.

The Adani Group had been in the final stages of formalizing an agreement to upgrade JKIA, which included constructing an additional runway and terminal, thereby managing the airport for thirty years. This deal had previously sparked controversy and protests within Kenya, including a strike by airport workers in September. Employees raised concerns that the agreement would compromise their working conditions and potentially lead to job losses.
The indictment against Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and other senior executives from Adani Green, as reported by the US Department of Justice, alleges they engaged in corrupt practices to secure solar power contracts in India. The charges involve bribes amounting to $265 million to officials in several Indian states, aimed at persuading power distribution companies to purchase solar power at inflated prices. While the Adani Group has dismissed these allegations as "baseless" and insists on its compliance with all laws, the news significantly impacted the stock prices of Adani Enterprises, Adani Energy Solutions, Adani Ports, and Adani Green Energy, which saw a decline of up to nearly 23% on the day of the indictment.
