Kennedy Regrets Leaked Video of Private Call with Trump on Vaccines

AP Robert F. Kennedy Jr. apologised on Tuesday after a video surfaced online showing a segment of a private phone call between the independent presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump. The video captures Kennedy listening on speakerphone as Trump reiterates debunked claims about childhood vaccines, an issue that has garnered Kennedy a dedicated following among vaccine sceptics.

Kennedys Apology for Leaked Trump Call

The video was initially posted by Kennedy's son, Robert F. Kennedy III, who mentioned it was recorded on Sunday, a day after Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania and a day before the Republican National Convention began. Although the video was deleted shortly after, copies continue to circulate on social media platforms.

"When President Trump called me I was taping with an in-house videographer," Kennedy wrote on the X platform. "I should have ordered the videographer to stop recording immediately. I am mortified that this was posted. I apologise to the president."

Impact on Campaigns

Kennedy's campaign has been focused on the challenging task of securing ballot access in all 50 states without party support, which demands significant time and resources. A spokesperson for Kennedy, Stefanie Spear, confirmed on Monday that he is not dropping out of the race.

Both Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden's allies are concerned about how Kennedy's campaign might influence their own White House ambitions. Historically, third-party candidates seldom secure more than a few percentage points of the vote, but Democrats attribute their losses in 2000 and 2016 to Green Party candidates swaying the elections towards Republicans.

Kennedy has leveraged nontraditional platforms like podcasts and YouTube to connect with younger voters and those who distrust institutions—groups that Trump also aims to attract. Democrats fear that Kennedy might draw anti-Trump voters who would otherwise support Biden, potentially aiding Trump's campaign.

Trump's Remarks

In the leaked conversation, Trump discusses the assassination attempt against him and mentions receiving a call from Biden afterward, which he described as "very nice." He compared the sensation of the bullet grazing his ear to "the world's largest mosquito."

"I would love you to do so," Trump tells Kennedy in the video. "And I think it'll be so good for you and so big for you. And we're going to win." Kennedy remains mostly silent during this part of the conversation, which starts with Trump already discussing vaccines.

Kennedy expressed regret over the incident, stating he should have stopped the recording immediately when Trump called. He acknowledged his mistake publicly and apologised for any embarrassment caused to Trump.

Concerns Over Third-Party Influence

Allies of both major parties are wary of third-party candidates like Kennedy affecting election outcomes. While such candidates rarely capture significant votes, their presence can still impact tight races by drawing votes away from major party candidates.

Kennedy's campaign continues despite these challenges, aiming to appeal to voters disillusioned with traditional political structures. His use of digital platforms has helped him build a diverse following, complicating predictions about his potential impact on the upcoming election.

The situation underscores ongoing concerns about third-party influences in U.S. elections and highlights the complexities candidates face when navigating modern political landscapes.

Kennedy's apology aims to mitigate any fallout from the leaked video while maintaining focus on his campaign objectives. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of political campaigns and the importance of managing public perceptions carefully.
