In a recent excerpt published by The Daily Mail, the 37-year-old recounted a particularly dark period in his life, describing the overwhelming feelings of depression that led him to contemplate ending his life.

James Middleton on Mental Health and Suicidal Thoughts

In the memoir, James opens up about how he felt lost and aimless. He describes a sense of emptiness, saying, "All the color leached out of my life." Whether at a party or simply walking outside, James felt disconnected from the world, lacking direction or purpose, as reported by Hindustan Times.

He explains the constant turmoil in his mind, saying, "There is a constant noise in my head like a radio that cannot be tuned... Life is no longer worth living. I feel suicidal." The weight of his mental health struggles led to insomnia, exhaustion, and the feeling of being trapped in a "giddy roller-coaster" of thoughts pushing him towards the brink of madness.

The toll on his personal life was severe. James admits that he distanced himself from his family, including his parents, his sisters Catherine and Pippa, and their husbands William and James.

How Ella, His Dog, Saved His Life

One of the most powerful moments in the memoir is James' reflection on a dark day in November 2017. Standing on a rooftop in London, he contemplated ending his life but was brought back from the edge by his loyal dog, Ella, as reported by Hindustan Times.

As he stood on the rooftop, James looked down at Ella, the dog who had been by his side through all his struggles. In that moment, he reconsidered his decision, thinking about what would happen to her if he were gone. "In that instant, I know I will not jump," James writes. "She has loved me unconditionally, faithfully. She gave me purpose, a reason to be."

James credits Ella with saving his life that day, saying, "She is the reason I do not take that fatal leap."

The Middleton Family's Support

After pulling himself back from the brink, James acknowledges the immense support he received from his family, particularly from his sister Catherine and her husband, Prince William. He recalls a moment shortly after this dark period when they asked him to do a Bible reading at their wedding. Despite his dyslexia, which makes reading a challenge, James practiced diligently and took it as a sign of their unwavering belief in him, as per media reports.

James also expressed gratitude for Catherine and William's work in mental health, noting that their understanding of the subject has helped bridge the gap during his most difficult moments. "My parents rely on them, and Pippa, to try to breach the impenetrable wall of my silence," he writes.

A Message of Hope

Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life offers an inspiring and heartfelt narrative of James Middleton's battle with depression, the love he shares with his dog Ella, and the support of his family. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of opening up about mental health and finding strength in the people and pets that stand by our side.
