Kash Patel Shares Experience of Racism Growing Up In US: 'Was Called Detestable'
Kash Patel, Trump's FBI chief pick, shared his experiences with racism during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
"Unfortunately, Senator, yes. I don’t want to get into those details with my family here," he stated.

Patel, 44, is being considered for the role of FBI Director. If confirmed, he would be the first Hindu and Indian American to hold this position.
Patel recounted a significant threat he faced after his personal information was leaked by Congress.
"If you look at the record from January 6, where I testified before that committee, because of my personal information being released by the Congress, I was subjected to a direct and significant threat on my life. And I put that information in the record. I had to move," he said.
His family, including his parents who travelled from India, attended the hearing at Capitol Hill.
"I wouldn’t be here today without their guidance, their unwavering support, and their relentless love. When President Trump informed me of his intention to nominate me as the director of the FBI, I was deeply honoured," Patel expressed.
Patel's Family Background
Patel's father escaped Uganda during Idi Amin's regime, which saw 300,000 people killed due to their ethnicity.
His mother hails from Tanzania and studied in India before marrying his father. They later moved to New York City via Canada.
"My mother is originally from Tanzania. She studied in India, as did my dad, and they were married there," Patel explained.
Senator Thom Tillis praised Patel's qualifications and dedication to justice. He described Patel as an excellent candidate for leading the FBI.
"Kash’s parents are Indian immigrants of Gujarati ancestry. They’re up here in the front row," Tillis noted.
Patel's upbringing in a large family instilled strong values in him. "That’s the only way we knew how to do things at the time, in the '70s and '80s, the Indian way, but we would soon learn the American way," he recalled.
Support from Senators
Senator Chuck Grassley highlighted Patel's career as one focused on fighting for just causes and exposing corruption. He addressed accusations against Patel regarding an "enemies list." Grassley stated these claims were unfair and unfounded.
Grassley defended Patel's actions in identifying individuals prioritising politics over national service. "Mr Patel has identified those he believes have put politics and personal ambition over service to the country," Grassley remarked.
Patel assured senators that if confirmed as FBI Director, his focus would be community safety and protection for children. He emphasised creating safe environments for children to play without hazards like needles.
Senator Lindsey Graham asked about Patel's experiences with racism. In response, Patel shared a distressing incident involving racial slurs directed at him.
"I was called a detestable -- and I’ll apologise if I don’t get it all right, but it’s in the record -- a detestable sand nigger who had no right being in this country," he recounted.
Senator Tillis also mentioned Patel's religious background and respect for all faiths. "Kash is a devout Hindu, and consistent with his faith, he’s shown respect to people of all faiths," Tillis added.
