Kamala Harris Pays Tribute To Grandparents' Legacy Ahead Of Trump Debate
Ahead of her upcoming debate with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris took a moment to pay tribute to her maternal grandparents, PV Gopalan and Rajam Gopalan, in a heartfelt post on National Grandparents Day.
Sharing a cherished family photo on X (formerly Twitter), Harris recalled their remarkable lives and their influence on her.

Kamala Harris's X Post
In her post, Harris reflected on her childhood visits to India and the powerful lessons she learned from her grandfather, a retired civil servant who played a part in India's fight for independence. "As a young girl visiting my grandparents in India, my grandfather took me on his morning walks, where he would discuss the importance of fighting for equality and fighting corruption," Harris wrote. She highlighted his role as a dedicated civil servant who helped refugees from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, and served as an advisor to Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda.

Harris also praised her grandmother, Rajam Gopalan, for her impactful social work. "My grandmother travelled across India-bullhorn in hand-to speak with women about accessing birth control. Their commitment to public service and fight for a better future live on in me today," she added.
While Harris' tribute was well-received by many, it sparked debate on social media. Some users questioned how her grandfather could have supported India's independence movement while serving under the British administration, which later became the Indian government. Critics pointed out the contradiction, with one user asking, "How could a serving bureaucrat be part of the independence movement opposing the same government?"
Despite the mixed reactions, Harris' post underscored her deep connection to her Indian heritage and the enduring influence her grandparents have had on her life and values.
As Harris prepares to face Donald Trump in a much-anticipated debate on September 10, her personal reflections serve as a reminder of the lessons from her family's legacy of public service and activism.
