Justin Trudeau Calls Intelligence Services "Criminal' For Leaking Fake Reports Linking Modi To Nijjar's Death

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has criticised his intelligence services for leaking information to the media. This follows a report by a Canadian newspaper that linked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau described the report as "speculative" and accused those responsible for the leak of being "criminals."

Trudeau's Response to Media Reports

During a press conference, Trudeau addressed questions about how such stories could be published without evidence. He stated, "We have seen, unfortunately, that criminals leaking top-secret information to the media have consistently gotten those stories wrong." He emphasised that this was why a national enquiry into foreign interference was necessary.

Justin Trudeau Condemns Intelligence Leaks On Nijjar Case

The Globe and Mail, a respected Canadian newspaper, had published an article implicating Modi, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Nijjar's death. The report cited an unnamed security official who claimed Canadian agencies believed Modi knew about the killing.

Canada's Official Stance on the Report

The Canadian government later clarified its position, stating that there was no evidence linking Modi or other Indian officials to any criminal activity in Canada. They labelled the report as both "speculative and inaccurate." This statement aimed to distance the government from the claims made in the media.

India's Ministry of External Affairs also dismissed the report, calling it "ludicrous" and part of a "smear campaign" against India. They argued that such reports only serve to further strain relations between India and Canada.

Background on India-Canada Relations

The controversy comes amid already tense relations between India and Canada. Last year, Ottawa accused India of involvement in Nijjar's assassination. India has denied these allegations, describing them as "preposterous." They also accused Trudeau of supporting Khalistani elements plotting against India.

In October 2024, The Washington Post reported that Indian diplomats in Canada had allegedly gathered intelligence on Sikh separatists over the past year. This information was reportedly used by Indian agencies to identify targets for criminal activities.

Trudeau reiterated his commitment to keeping Canadians safe and upholding the rule of law. He stated that his primary responsibility is ensuring safety across Canada while addressing complex situations effectively.

The diplomatic tension between India and Canada continues as both nations navigate these sensitive issues. The allegations and subsequent denials highlight ongoing challenges in their bilateral relations.
