Minister Robbed at Gunpoint on Johannesburg Highway
South African police are on a manhunt for suspects who robbed Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and disarmed her bodyguards of their pistols on a busy Johannesburg highway.
In a shocking incident that took place on a busy Johannesburg highway, South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga was robbed at gunpoint and her two bodyguards were disarmed by unidentified assailants. The robbery occurred under the cover of darkness in the early hours of Monday morning while the minister's bodyguards were attending to a punctured tire.

According to police reports, three armed men emerged suddenly from nearby bushes and ordered the bodyguards to lie face-down on the ground. They then proceeded to disarm them before turning their attention towards Chikunga. The minister was threatened with firearms and subsequently robbed of some personal belongings. Police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe disclosed that an immediate manhunt has been initiated following this unprecedented incident.
The Trauma of Being Targeted
During a parliamentary briefing held on Tuesday, Minister Chikunga shared her traumatic experience with fellow lawmakers. She described it as extremely distressing and devastating. Recounting the horrifying moments, she said she tried reaching out for help when she sensed something wrong but was thwarted by one of the robbers who opened her car door, pointed a gun at her head and ordered her out.
A Familiar Modus Operandi?
The circumstances surrounding this particular crime suggest that Chikunga and her security detail may have fallen victim to what appears to be an established criminal strategy prevalent on some major roads across South Africa: Robbers deliberately place spikes on roads leading vehicles' tires to burst; they then seize upon this opportunity to ambush unsuspecting occupants when they step out of their vehicle for repairs or inspection.
Counselling Support for Bodyguards
In light of these events, authorities confirmed that both bodyguards are currently receiving necessary support along with counselling to help them cope with the traumatic ordeal. The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of government officials and the effectiveness of their protection details.
In conclusion, this audacious attack on a high-ranking government official in broad daylight not only exposes the escalating crime rates in South Africa but also underscores an urgent need for bolstering security measures, particularly for those holding public offices. A thorough investigation is underway and it remains to be seen how swiftly justice will be served in this case.
