Jimmy Carter Celebrates 100 Years by Casting His Ballot by Mail for the 2024 Election

Former President Jimmy Carter has participated in the 2024 election by casting his vote via mail, as confirmed by the Carter Center. This event occurred just over two weeks after Carter marked his 100th birthday on October 1 at his residence in Plains, Georgia, where he is receiving hospice care.

Chip Carter, his son, mentioned that the former president was keenly focused on this election. "He's plugged in," Chip Carter told The Associated Press. "I asked him two months ago if he was trying to live to be 100, and he said, No, I'm trying to live to vote for Kamala Harris."

Record Voter Turnout in Georgia

Georgia has seen a significant voter turnout since early voting commenced on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, nearly 460,000 voters had either voted in person or submitted absentee ballots, according to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

The Carter Center released a brief statement confirming the former president's vote but did not provide additional details. Despite his health challenges, Carter's commitment to voting underscores his engagement with the political process.

Absentee Ballot Rules in Georgia

In Georgia, an absentee ballot is considered valid once it is received by local election officials. Robert Sinners, a spokesperson for the secretary of state's office, explained that the ballot is "deemed to have been voted then and there." This means Carter's vote will count even if he passes away before Election Day on November 5.

Different states have varying rules regarding whether early votes remain valid if the voter dies before Election Day. This issue gained prominence during the 2020 elections amid rising COVID-19 fatalities.

The enthusiasm for early voting reflects a broader trend of increased voter participation in Georgia. The state's residents are actively engaging in the democratic process ahead of the upcoming election.

Carter's dedication to voting highlights his enduring influence and commitment to civic duties. His actions serve as a reminder of the importance of participating in elections and making one's voice heard.
