Jill Biden Stands Firm in Support of President's Reelection Despite Debate Worries

Jill Biden expressed her unwavering support for President Joe Biden's re-election campaign on Monday. Despite some Democrats urging him to withdraw after a poor debate performance against Donald Trump, the president remains committed to the race.

Jill Biden Backs Reelection Bid

"For all the talk out there about this race, Joe has made it clear that he's all in," Jill Biden told a military audience in Wilmington, North Carolina. She added, "That's the decision that he's made, and just as he has always supported my career, I am all in too."

Veterans and Military Families for Biden-Harris

During her visit, Jill Biden announced the creation of an organising group called Veterans and Military Families for Biden-Harris. This announcement was part of her stops in Tampa, Florida, and Columbus, Georgia.

The president has consistently stated since the June 27 debate that he will not exit the race. He reiterated this stance on Monday in a letter to congressional Democrats and during a telephone interview with MSNBC.

Contrasting Views on Service Members

Jill Biden used her speech to highlight differences between her husband and Trump regarding their attitudes toward US service members, veterans, and their families. She mentioned that their late son Beau served in Iraq with the Delaware Army National Guard and that her father was a Navy signalman during World War II.

"This is personal to us," she said, describing the emotional challenges of connecting with a service member stationed overseas or enduring holidays without them. "Let me ask you this ... Does Donald Trump know what it's like?" she questioned.

She also referenced reports that Trump called service members who died in combat "suckers" and "losers" during a 2018 trip to France. Trump denies these allegations. "It's disgraceful, but it's not surprising," she remarked.

Integrity and Character

The first lady emphasised that military members honour their oath to support and defend the Constitution. She argued that Trump cannot be trusted to do the same. "You deserve a commander in chief who serves with integrity and wisdom and character, and that's my husband, Joe Biden," she stated.

A spokesperson for Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

During the debate, Biden and Trump clashed over who cares more about veterans. Biden mentioned his recent visit to an American military cemetery in France, where US soldiers from World War I are buried—a visit Trump skipped during his 2018 trip.

Trump accused Biden of prioritising migrants over veterans and service members. He also criticised Biden for the chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

The first lady's daylong tour aimed to boost confidence in President Biden's campaign following his shaky debate performance against Trump last month. Some congressional Democrats have suggested another candidate should challenge Trump due to concerns about Biden's mental and physical capabilities at 81 years old.

Jill Biden concluded by stressing the importance of having a leader who respects military service members' sacrifices. She reiterated her husband's commitment to serving with integrity and character.
