Jill Biden to Release Children's Book Inspired by White House Cat, Willow

Washington, Mar 28 AP - The First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden, has ventured into the world of children's literature with a new picture book centered around Willow, the Biden family's beloved White House cat. Scheduled for release in June, "Willow the White House Cat" is a narrative that traces the journey of the short-haired tabby to one of the most iconic residences globally - 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. This announcement was made by Simon & Schuster on Wednesday.

The inspiration behind this heartwarming tale stems from an event during the 2020 presidential campaign when Willow made an unforgettable impression on Jill Biden. The cat leaped onto the stage while Jill Biden was delivering a speech at a Pennsylvania farm. Following this incident, the Bidens adopted Willow, naming her after Jill Biden's hometown, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.

"As Willow bounds from room to room, exploring history in her new home, she learns quickly about all of the incredible people who make the People's House run," Jill Biden shared in the publisher's announcement. She emphasized how Willow was embraced with love and care by everyone at the White House, mirroring the warm welcome extended to previous First Families and visitors alike.

Willow, now four years old, holds the unique distinction of being the only Biden pet currently residing at the White House. The Bidens previously had three German shepherd dogs - Champ, who passed away in 2021, and Major and Commander, both rehomed due to aggressive behavior towards Secret Service personnel and White House staff.

Presidential pets have long captivated public interest, often becoming subjects of books. Notable examples include George H.W. Bush's dog Millie and first lady Hillary Clinton's writings about Socks and Buddy, her family pets. President Barack Obama's Portuguese water dog, Bo, has also been featured in literature.

"Willow the White House Cat" is a collaborative effort between Jill Biden and Alyssa Satin Capucilli, a celebrated author known for her contributions to children's literature. The book's illustrations are crafted by Kate Berube, whose work has received widespread acclaim. Published by Paula Wiseman Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, this title adds to Jill Biden's repertoire of children's books including "Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops" and "Joey: The Story of Joe Biden." Her memoir "Where the Light Enters" was published in 2019. In line with her philanthropic endeavors, Jill Biden will donate proceeds from this book to charities dedicated to supporting military dogs.
