Jewish Voice for Peace Protests at Trump Tower Demanding Mahmoud Khalil's Release

Protesters from Jewish Voice for Peace gathered at Trump Tower on Thursday to oppose the immigration arrest of Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist, was involved in protests against Israel at Columbia University. Demonstrators wore red shirts with messages like "Jews say stop arming Israel" and held banners demanding Khalil's return. Police arrested 98 individuals who refused to leave, charging them with trespassing and other offenses.

Protests at Trump Tower for Khalils Release

Khalil, a 30-year-old permanent US resident married to an American citizen, was detained outside his New York City apartment on Saturday. Although he hasn't been charged with any crimes, he faces deportation and is currently held in an immigration detention centre in Louisiana. President Donald Trump stated that Khalil's arrest is the first of many planned actions against students involved in activities he deems anti-Semitic or anti-American.

Protests and Legal Actions

The White House did not comment on the Trump Tower protest. Among the demonstrators was actor Debra Winger, who was not arrested. She criticised the Trump administration for its stance on antisemitism and expressed support for Khalil, stating, "I am just standing up for my rights, and I am standing up for Mahmoud Khalil, who has been abducted illegally and taken to an undisclosed location." Winger questioned whether such actions align with American values.

Jewish Voice for Peace, established in 1996, describes itself as a grassroots movement of American Jews advocating against US support for Israel's treatment of Palestinians. The group is one of several Jewish organisations worldwide supporting Palestinian rights. Sophie Edelhart, a protester and Barnard graduate studying Yiddish in Canada, noted that Trump Tower was chosen as a symbolic protest site due to its association with President Trump.

Impact on Columbia University

Columbia University became a central hub for pro-Palestinian protests across US campuses last year, resulting in over 2,000 arrests. On Thursday, Columbia announced disciplinary actions against students involved in spring protests. The Trump administration plans to withdraw at least USD 400 million from Columbia-affiliated programmes as punishment for insufficiently addressing protest activities deemed antisemitic by the president.

Khalil's supporters argue that his arrest infringes on free speech rights. Protests have occurred throughout New York City and nationwide, including outside a Manhattan courthouse during a brief hearing on his case. Khalil completed his master's degree requirements at Columbia in December and is expecting his first child with his wife.

Lawsuit Against Congressional Committee

On Thursday, lawyers representing Khalil and other students filed a lawsuit to prevent a congressional committee from accessing student disciplinary records from Columbia and Barnard College. The lawsuit aims to protect the privacy of students identified by pseudonyms in connection with the protests.

Trump Tower frequently attracts demonstrations both supporting and opposing its namesake. However, protests inside the building are less common. The public can access its multi-story atrium, which connects visitors to various eateries like the Trump Grill.
