Japan's New Year Rattled By Quakes, Cracked Roads And Toppled Homes| Watch Video
At least thirty people were killed as central Japan was struck by a series of earthquakes on New Year's Day, resulting in damaged homes and a major fire. The extent of the damage from the 155 quakes was still being assessed, with news footage depicting buildings that had toppled, sunken boats at a port, numerous charred homes, and locals left without power in freezing overnight temperatures. Footage shared on social media displayed road signs and display boards at railway stations shaking after one of the earthquakes, which had a magnitude of 7.6.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one user wrote, "Some of the footage coming out of Japan following the 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake which struck the country earlier this morning is insane and truly shows the power of geological forces on this planet." The tweet included four videos capturing moments when the deadly earthquake hit the country.

In the first video, the notice board can be observed shaking at the railway station while, at the very moment when the earthquake struck Japan, a man was seen holding a railing for support. In the second video, people were seen in a park panicking as pillars toppled. Furthermore, the third video showed huge cracks in the road, while the fourth video displayed houses toppled upside down.

Japan has dropped the highest-level tsunami alert, but residents of coastal areas are being instructed not to return to their homes as deadly waves could still occur. The worst-hit area in the relatively remote Noto peninsula has seen thousands of army personnel, firefighters, and police officers dispatched from across the country. However, rescue efforts have been hindered by badly damaged and blocked roads, and one of the area's airports has been forced to close due to runway cracks."
