Japanese Navy Helicopters Crash in Pacific; Search for Missing Crew Ongoing

During a night-time training exercise in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo, two Japanese navy helicopters with eight crew members onboard are believed to have crashed, sparking an extensive search and rescue operation. Defense Minister Minoru Kihara disclosed to the media that the two SH-60K choppers, each carrying four crew members from the Maritime Self Defense Force, lost contact near Torishima island, approximately 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tokyo, late Saturday. Despite the recovery of one crew member from the waters, whose condition remains undisclosed, the search continues for the remaining seven individuals.

Navy Helicopter Crash; Crew Missing

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, with Kihara emphasizing that the current focus is on the rescue efforts. In response to the incident, the MSDF has mobilized eight warships and five aircraft to locate the missing crew. Fragments believed to be from one of the SH-60K helicopters have been retrieved, leading officials to conclude that a crash has occurred. The SH-60K Seahawk helicopters, designed by Sikorsky for multi-mission purposes including anti-submarine warfare, were engaged in night-time anti-submarine training when they lost contact.

One helicopter was reported to have sent an emergency signal before losing contact at 10:38 p.m. (1338 GMT), with the second helicopter losing contact roughly 25 minutes later. These aircraft were based out of air bases in Nagasaki and Tokushima prefecture respectively. Typically deployed on destroyers for anti-submarine missions, these training exercises are crucial for Japan's naval capabilities.

The incident was part of a routine exercise involving only Japanese navy forces, with no foreign aircraft or warships reported in the vicinity. This comes as Japan has been intensifying its military preparedness and enhancing its deterrence capabilities in response to China's growing military assertiveness. The country's 2022 security strategy outlines a significant military buildup and fortification of defenses, particularly around its southwestern islands in the Pacific and East China Sea.

This recent mishap follows a series of unfortunate events involving Japan's Self-Defense Forces. Just a year prior, a Ground Self-Defense Force UH-60 Blackhawk crashed off Miyako island in southwestern Japan, resulting in the loss of all 10 crew members onboard. Additionally, in January 2022, an Air Self-Defense F-15 fighter jet met a similar fate off Japan's northcentral coast, claiming the lives of two crew members.

At the time of Saturday's crash, there were no weather advisories in effect for the area, as reported by Japan's NHK public television. The ongoing search and rescue operations underscore Japan's commitment to ensuring the safety of its military personnel during such critical training exercises.
