Japan's Emperor and Empress Start Official UK State Visit After Delay

Emperor Naruhito of Japan, along with Empress Masako, made a significant arrival in the UK on Saturday, marking the commencement of a long-anticipated official state visit. This event, initially slated for 2020, faced postponement due to the global coronavirus pandemic. The royal couple's presence in the UK began with their landing at Stansted Airport, located north of London, in the late afternoon. Their itinerary includes seven days of private engagements leading up to the formal commencement of their state visit on June 25.

The visit holds personal significance for both Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, as they have academic ties to the UK, having both studied at the University of Oxford during different periods. This trip is notably Emperor Naruhito's first overseas journey since his ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019, a milestone event that was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he did make a trip to the UK in September 2022 to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

The official state visit is set to begin on Tuesday with a formal reception by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The day's events will include a ceremonial carriage ride to Buckingham Palace and a tribute by Emperor Naruhito at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Westminster Abbey, followed by a return to Buckingham Palace for a state banquet. This banquet will see the attendance of key political figures including Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who are currently engaged in a general election campaign with the vote scheduled for July 4.
