The alarm rang out around noon Saturday, prompting an immediate evacuation of the entire building. At that moment, the House was in session and staffers were busy working inside. The situation caused considerable disruption during an already tense period for lawmakers who were grappling with imminent legislative deadlines.

Cannon House Office Building Reopened

An hour after the alarm sounded, Capitol Police reopened the building once they determined there was no threat present. During this period, significant confusion prevailed as officials attempted to ascertain whether it was a genuine emergency or some form of mistake or prank.

Bowman Acknowledges Responsibility

The GOP-controlled House Administration Committee - which is responsible for overseeing issues related to the Capitol complex – shared an image showing someone activating the fire alarm who appeared to be Rep. Bowman himself. Subsequently, Bowman confirmed he had indeed pulled on what turned out to be an ill-placed door handle which set off the fire alarm system.

The New York lawmaker explained his actions by stating that he mistakenly triggered it while trying desperately to get through a door that is typically open but happened to be closed due its being weekend hours. He clarified his intention saying: "I thought it would help me open the door." He further denied any intent of causing delay or creating obstructions in official proceedings by pulling what he thought was just a door handle.

Ongoing Investigation

In response to these events and subsequent explanations from Rep. Bowman, Capitol Police released a statement late on Saturday. They stated that investigations into what exactly transpired and the reasons behind it are ongoing. Regardless of intent, the incident resulted in significant disruption to an already fraught legislative process.

In conclusion, this unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the high-pressure environment within which lawmakers operate, particularly when faced with crucial deadlines such as preventing a government shutdown. It underscores the need for clear communication and effective security measures within such sensitive premises to prevent unnecessary disruptions. While Rep. Bowman’s actions were unintentional, they nonetheless caused considerable confusion and delay during a critical time for lawmakers.
