Jaishankar's UAE Trip: Bilateral Talks and BAPS Temple Visit Highlight Strong Ties
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) underscores the deepening ties between India and the UAE, marked by discussions on bilateral relations and the situation in Gaza. His itinerary included a visit to the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, participation in the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations, and talks with his UAE counterpart, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Jaishankar's visit to the BAPS Hindu Mandir, a project inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14 this year, was highlighted as a gesture of the strong cultural and friendly relations between India and the UAE. The temple, described by Jaishankar as a "cultural bridge" and a "reservoir of global harmony," stands as a testament to the friendship between the two nations. The land for this temple was generously donated by the UAE, with the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sansthan (BAPS) being the organization behind its construction.
The External Affairs Minister's engagement continued with his participation in International Yoga Day at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, reflecting the cultural exchange and mutual respect between India and the UAE. This event saw participation from people of various nationalities, emphasizing yoga's universal appeal and its role in bringing communities together.
The visit also served as an opportunity for Jaishankar to review the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the UAE. This partnership has seen significant growth, especially following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's landmark visit to the UAE in August 2015. The relationship was further strengthened by the signing of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in February 2022. This agreement aims to enhance economic engagement through tariff reductions and improved market access for service providers.
The Indian community in the UAE, numbering around 3.5 million, forms the largest expatriate group in the country. Their presence is a vital link in the chain of cultural and economic ties that bind India and the UAE. The two countries have witnessed an upswing in their relations over recent years, with bilateral engagements covering a wide range of sectors.
India and the UAE's relationship is not just limited to economic ties but extends to strategic collaborations on regional and global issues. The discussions between Jaishankar and Al Nahyan were expected to cover various aspects of this partnership, reflecting both countries' commitment to further strengthening their ties.
The UAE stands as one of the top four investors in India for the fiscal year 2022-23, highlighting the economic dimension of this partnership. The CEPA between India and the UAE is a landmark move that promises to bolster economic ties by facilitating trade and investment flows between the two countries.
Jaishankar's visit is a clear indication of India's intent to nurture its relationship with the UAE. It showcases India's commitment to building strong bilateral relations based on mutual respect, cultural exchange, and economic cooperation. As both nations look forward to expanding their partnership, such high-level visits play a crucial role in setting the agenda for future collaborations.
