Indian External Affairs Minister Discusses Bilateral Ties with US Counterpart Amid Diplomatic Crisis
Amid a diplomatic crisis between India and Canada, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations. The meeting took place at the State Department in Washington.
The External Affairs Minister of India, S Jaishankar, met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington on September 28th. This meeting aimed to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations amidst an ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada over the killing of a Khalistani separatist.

Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at being back in Washington and acknowledged the support received from the US for the G20 Summit. He recalled that they had hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this summer. "Good to be back here. And we, of course, had the prime minister here this summer. Thanks to the US for all the support to the G20 Summit," said Jaishankar while addressing media personnel alongside Blinken prior to their meeting held at the State Department.
Blinken reciprocated by acknowledging that he has had productive discussions with Indian representatives over recent weeks, including during sessions at both G20 and on sidelines of UN General Assembly session in New York. He also conveyed his eagerness about further talks with his Indian counterpart—Jaishankar.
Anticipations Around The Meeting
While officials from both sides remained reticent about revealing specifics regarding agenda items for their meeting, it was widely anticipated that current diplomatic crisis involving two American allies—India and Canada—would be prominently addressed during these talks. However, no questions were entertained from media representatives present there by either leader.
A Diplomatic Tightrope Walk?
"I don’t want to preview conversations that Blinken will have in that meeting with Jaishankar but as we’ve made clear previously; we’ve raised this issue [the diplomatic crisis] and engaged our Indian counterparts," stated an unnamed official source hinting towards delicacy surrounding these matters.
This statement suggests that while the US acknowledges the ongoing diplomatic crisis and has engaged in discussions with Indian counterparts, it is also keen on not making any premature statements about these sensitive issues. This approach seems indicative of a cautious diplomatic strategy by both nations; one that aims at resolving international disputes without jeopardizing their bilateral relationship.
In conclusion, this meeting between Jaishankar and Blinken can be seen as an attempt to further fortify India-US ties amidst global challenges. While the exact details of their discussion remain undisclosed, it's evident that both leaders are committed to maintaining strong bilateral relations and addressing any potential roadblocks collaboratively. The outcome of this meeting may well shape future diplomacy between two of the world’s largest democracies.
