Jailed Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Likely To Be Released On June 11
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, who is locked in Adiala Jail since August 2023, is likely to be released on June 11, said Gohar Ali Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will review petitions to suspend sentences given to Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, related to a £190 million case.
Imran Khan was held following involvement in Al-Qadir Trust case and alleged charges for misuse of national treasury funds. According to the reports, the Al-Qadir Trust case involves a settlement with the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA). This agency agreed to return £190 million to Pakistan after a corruption investigation involving property tycoon Malik Riaz.

Allegations suggest that Imran Khan's administration allowed these funds, meant for the national treasury, to offset liabilities owed by Riaz's company, Bahria Town.
Political Tensions and PTI's Response
The PTI is gearing up for a protest against the coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Gohar stated that Khan would lead this movement from jail. A press conference detailing their strategy, especially concerning the upcoming federal budget, is scheduled for June 9. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur also warned of significant mobilisation after Eid Al-Adha if Khan remains imprisoned.
Gohar Ali Khan described June 11 as crucial for both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The IHC had previously delayed hearings after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) sought more time for its arguments. Gohar expressed optimism about a positive outcome in the forthcoming hearing.
Allegations and Political Dynamics
Bushra Bibi, co-trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust and Khan's wife, is also involved in this case. Gohar Ali Khan claimed she is detained without formal charges to pressure Khan. He emphasized that no deals would be made for Khan's release. Meanwhile, political tensions are high following allegations by Khan that the February 8 elections were rigged extensively. He referred to it as "Mother of All Rigging" and accused opponents like PML-N and PPP of being "mandate thieves."
In response to these allegations, Rana Sanaullah, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, urged PTI to engage in dialogue with the government. He welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's offer for negotiations aimed at reforming electoral laws.
