Jagmeet Singh Steps Down After NDP's Worst-Ever Show In Canadian Polls

Jagmeet Singh has announced his resignation as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) after the party suffered a major defeat in the 2025 Canadian federal election. Singh, who led the NDP for nearly seven years, was the first Sikh to lead a major national political party in Canada, according to a Firstpost report.

The 2025 elections have been extremely disappointing for the NDP. So far, the party has won only two seats, with just 6 per cent of the total vote share. This is a big drop from the 24 seats the NDP held in the previous parliament. Because the party now has fewer than 12 seats, it may lose its official status as a national party in Canada.

Jagmeet Singh Steps Down

During his time as leader, Jagmeet Singh played an important role in Canadian politics. For several years, he supported former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government from outside the coalition. This support helped keep Trudeau's government stable. However, Singh withdrew his support late last year, as Trudeau's popularity fell sharply.

The poor performance of the NDP in this election has helped the Liberal Party, now led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, gain a strong position. Just a few months ago, polls had predicted a big win for the Conservative Party. But due to a weak Conservative campaign and growing concerns over US President Donald Trump's comments about Canada, the Liberal Party regained public support.

As of now, the Liberal Party has won 133 seats with a vote share of 42.9 per cent, while the Conservatives have won 116 seats with 41.8 per cent of the vote. CBC News has already declared the Liberal Party the winner of the election, allowing it to form the government for the fourth straight term.

In contrast, early predictions in January had expected the NDP to get around 19 per cent of the vote. But that support did not materialise on election day.

A longtime NDP supporter summed up the result by telling The Toronto Sun: "Blame the orange man down south. The same thing happened to the Tories, but it's worse for the NDP."

Jagmeet Singh's resignation marks the end of an important chapter in the NDP's history, and the party will now begin the search for a new leader.
