Italy's Meloni Hosts Trilateral Meeting with US and EU Leaders to Foster Dialogue

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hosted a significant trilateral meeting in Rome on Sunday. This gathering included US Vice President JD Vance and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Meloni aimed to initiate what she described as a "new beginning" in diplomatic relations. The meeting was seen as a diplomatic achievement for Meloni, who has been viewed as a potential mediator with the Trump administration.

Meloni Hosts Key US-EU Diplomatic Meeting

Meloni expressed pride in hosting the leaders of the EU and the US, emphasising the importance of starting a dialogue. She recalled proposing this initiative during her visit to Washington, where she met President Donald Trump. "I hope that today can be a first meeting and a new beginning," Meloni stated, highlighting Rome's role in promoting dialogue despite trade matters being under EU Commission jurisdiction.

Trade and Diplomatic Relations

Vice President Vance acknowledged Meloni as "a good friend" and noted her efforts to bridge Europe and the United States. He admitted that while there are disagreements, such as on tariffs, there are also many areas of agreement. Von der Leyen expressed hope for a mutually beneficial trade agreement between the EU and the US, noting their significant trade exchange.

The Ukrainian conflict was also discussed, with von der Leyen emphasising unity in seeking a just peace. She thanked the US for its commitment to ending the war and urged progress in peace talks, stating that "the next week will be crucial" for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Challenges and Strategic Alignments

This meeting provided relief for Meloni, who had faced challenges in playing a central role in Europe's diplomatic efforts regarding Ukraine. Earlier, she distanced herself from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's initiative involving potential European troop deployment to Ukraine. Although initially part of discussions with key European nations, she was later excluded from coordination with Trump's administration.

Tensions rose when French President Emmanuel Macron accused Meloni of spreading misinformation about her absence from meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Political analyst Lorenzo Castellani noted that Meloni's priority is maintaining close ties with the US, as demonstrated by Sunday's trilateral initiative.

Italy's Role in Diplomacy

Castellani highlighted Meloni's strategy of balancing relations between the EU and the US. He stated, "Her strategy scored a win on Sunday," as she seeks to involve Washington in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. Analysts believe Meloni could position herself as a mediator, leveraging Italy's role to facilitate compromise between Europe and the US on issues like tariffs.

Rome was at the centre of international diplomacy on Sunday. Zelenskyy met with top US officials and European leaders before a crucial phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy also spoke with Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the US ambassador's residence after attending Pope Leo XIV's inaugural Mass at St. Peter's Square.
