Israeli Forces Shell Tent Camps Near Rafah, Killing 25 and Wounding 50
In a tragic escalation of violence in Gaza, Israeli forces have been reported to shell tent camps for displaced Palestinians north of Gaza's southern city of Rafah, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and injuring another 50 individuals. This incident, as confirmed by the territory's Health Ministry and emergency workers, marks a continuation of the intense conflict between Israel and Hamas, significantly impacting the civilian population.

According to Ahmed Radwan, a spokesperson for the Civil Defense first responders in Rafah, the shelling occurred at two separate locations in a coastal area now overwhelmed with tents. The Health Ministry has provided the casualty figures from these attacks. Notably, these locations were just outside an Israeli-designated "safe zone," raising concerns about the safety of displaced populations.
The Israeli military has stated that the incident is under review, maintaining that there is no evidence of an IDF strike in the area. However, details on other strikes or their intended targets have not been disclosed. This lack of clarity comes amidst previous bombings near what has been termed a "humanitarian zone" in Muwasi, a rural coastal area now home to sprawling tent camps.
Witness accounts reveal the harrowing moments leading up to the fatalities. Mona Ashour recounted losing her husband after he went to investigate an initial munition that produced a loud bang and bright flash near Red Cross tents. A subsequent strike resulted in further casualties among those who had emerged from their shelters.
Hasan al-Najjar shared a similar story of loss, with his sons being killed while attempting to aid panicked individuals after the first strike. These accounts underscore the perilous conditions faced by civilians in Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge from ongoing hostilities across Gaza.
The recent strikes underscore the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where displaced families face severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. The United Nations has warned that no place in Gaza is safe, as civilians grapple with the consequences of a conflict that has entered its ninth month.
International criticism has mounted against Israel's military operations in Gaza, particularly concerning the high civilian death toll. The top United Nations court has even highlighted a "plausible risk of genocide" in Gaza, a charge vehemently denied by Israel. Israel maintains that its operations target Hamas fighters and infrastructure and attributes civilian casualties to militants operating within populated areas.
The conflict has seen more than 37,100 fatalities in Gaza, as reported by the territory's Health Ministry. This figure includes both combatants and civilians, reflecting the profound human cost of the ongoing war initiated after Hamas's attack on October 7, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and abductions.
This latest incident adds to the growing international outrage over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and raises urgent questions about the conduct of military operations in densely populated civilian areas.
