Israeli Strike Targets Gaza Aid Convoy, Killing Four Palestinians

An Israeli military strike targeted the first vehicle in a convoy transporting medical supplies and fuel to an Emirati hospital in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of four Palestinians from a local transportation company, officials reported on Friday. The Israeli military claimed the four men were armed, while the American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) group stated that the missile strike on Thursday occurred without any prior warning or communication.

Gaza Aid Convoy Strike Kills Four

The incident highlights the chaotic conditions in Gaza and the risks faced by aid groups since the Israel-Hamas conflict began following Hamas' October 7 attack on southern Israel. Over 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced, with many now living in makeshift tent camps. International experts warn that hundreds of thousands are on the brink of famine.

Convoy Attack Details

The strike occurred as Anera was delivering supplies to the Emirates Red Crescent Hospital in Rafah, according to Sandra Rasheed, Anera's director for Palestinian territories. The missile hit the convoy's lead vehicle on Salah al-Din Road. "The convoy, coordinated by Anera and approved by Israeli authorities, included an Anera employee who was fortunately unharmed," Rasheed said in a statement. "Despite this devastating incident, our understanding is that the remaining vehicles in the convoy were able to continue and successfully deliver the aid to the hospital. We are urgently seeking further details about what happened."

A subsequent statement from Anera confirmed that four Palestinians were killed. The group explained that its "coordinated and cleared transport plan called for unarmed security guards in the convoy with its local partner, a company called Move One." Shortly after leaving Kerem Shalom, initial reports indicated that four community members with previous mission experience and involvement in community security with Move One took command of the lead vehicle due to concerns about route safety and potential looting.

Israeli Military Response

The Israeli military, responding to questions from The Associated Press, said it had been "monitoring the situation" and observed "armed individuals joined one of the cars of an Anera convoy and began to lead the convoy." "We stress that the presence of armed individuals was not coordinated, and they were not part of the pre-coordinated convoy—as noted in Anera's statement regarding the incident," the Israeli military stated. "After ruling out potential harm to the trucks, as well as a clear identification of weapons, a strike was carried out targeting the armed individuals."

The Israeli military did not explain why it did not contact Anera before conducting the strike. Other aid convoys have also faced attacks by armed gangs and those desperate for food in Gaza.

International Aid Efforts

The United Arab Emirates, which established diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020 and has been providing aid to Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began, did not comment on this particular attack. Israeli forces have previously fired upon other aid convoys in Gaza. The World Food Program announced on Wednesday that it is halting all staff movement in Gaza until further notice after Israeli troops fired on one of its marked vehicles, hitting it with at least ten rounds despite having received multiple clearances from Israeli authorities.

On July 23, UNICEF reported that two of its vehicles were struck by live ammunition while waiting at a designated holding point. An Israeli attack in April targeted three World Central Kitchen vehicles, resulting in seven fatalities.

Impact of Ongoing Conflict

Hamas' October 7 attack resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in Israel and saw 250 others taken hostage. Since then, Israel's offensive in Gaza has led to over 40,000 Palestinian deaths and heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.

This tragic event underscores the severe challenges faced by humanitarian efforts amid ongoing violence and instability in Gaza.
