Israeli Settler Population in Occupied West Bank Grows by 3% in 2023

The settler population in the occupied West Bank has grown to 517,407, according to a new report. This marks an increase of nearly 3% from the previous year and over 15% in the last five years.

The population of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank has experienced a notable increase, with a growth rate of nearly 3 per cent in 2023. This information was revealed in a recent report based on population statistics provided by the Israeli government. The report, published on Sunday by the pro-settler organization WestBankJewishPopulationStats.com, indicated that the settler population grew from 502,991 in December 2022 to 517,407 as of December 31, 2023.

Israeli Settlers Thrive Despite International Opposition

Steady Growth and Surpassing Milestones

Over the past five years, the settler population has demonstrated consistent growth, with an overall increase of more than 15 per cent. A significant milestone was reached last year when the settler population surpassed the half-million mark. The report suggests that this growth may continue at an accelerated pace in the coming years.

Changing Attitudes and Political Dynamics

The report attributes this growth to a shift in attitudes among Israelis, particularly in response to the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. This event, which sparked the current conflict in Gaza, is believed to have influenced many Israelis who were previously opposed to settlement-building on occupied land to reconsider their positions.

International Concerns and Legal Implications

The international community largely views Israeli settlements as illegal and detrimental to peace efforts, as they occupy land that the Palestinians seek for their own state. The Biden administration recently imposed sanctions on four settlers for acts of violence against Palestinians and activists in the West Bank.

Projected Growth and East Jerusalem

If the current growth rate persists, the report projects that the settler population in the West Bank could exceed 600,000 by 2030. However, the report excludes population figures for east Jerusalem, where over 200,000 Israelis reside in settlements that Israel considers neighborhoods of its capital. East Jerusalem is also claimed by the Palestinians as their potential capital.

Settlement Approvals Amidst Tensions

Amidst the ongoing conflict and heightened tensions in the West Bank, the Israeli government, which is heavily influenced by settler leaders and supporters, has approved or is in the process of approving three settlement plans in east Jerusalem since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023. This rapid pace of settlement approvals has raised concerns among observers.

Violence and Human Rights Concerns

The report coincides with a period of intense violence in the West Bank. Since the Hamas attack, Israel has imposed strict measures in the region, restricting movement and conducting frequent raids on alleged militant targets. Palestinian health officials report that 388 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank during this period, mostly in clashes with Israeli forces. Additionally, the Israeli rights group Yesh Din documented 225 incidents of Israeli civilian violence, including nine Palestinians shot and killed by settlers in just the first month and a half of the conflict.

The escalating tensions and ongoing violence in the West Bank highlight the complexities and challenges in the region, underscoring the need for peaceful resolutions and respect for international law.
