Israeli Military Uncovers Vast Tunnel Network in Gaza, Raising Security Concerns
The Israeli militarys revelation of a substantial tunnel system in Gaza, close to the Erez crossing, highlights potential weaknesses in surveillance that enabled Hamas to prepare for a deadly attack on October 7.
Beit Hanoun, Gaza Strip - The Israeli military revealed the discovery of a large tunnel shaft in Gaza, situated near a former bustling crossing into Israel. This revelation raises significant questions about how Israeli surveillance overlooked such conspicuous preparations by Hamas for their deadly October 7 assault.

Tunnel's Proximity and Features
The tunnel's entryway is merely a few hundred meters away from the heavily fortified Erez crossing and a nearby Israeli military base. The tunnel stretches for more than four kilometers (2.5 miles) and connects to a sprawling network of tunnels across Gaza. Its width allows for the passage of vehicles. The military confirmed that the tunnel facilitated the movement of vehicles, militants, and supplies in preparation for the October 7 attack.
October 7 Attack and Security Breaches
On October 7, militants employed a rocket-propelled grenade to breach a section of the wall near the Erez crossing. They stormed the base, resulting in the deaths of at least three soldiers and the abduction of others who were taken back to Gaza. This incident was one of several instances along the border wall where militants effortlessly bypassed Israel's security defenses, entered Israeli territory, and caused significant casualties.
Devastating Consequences and Objectives
The unprecedented attack triggered a devastating war that has lasted for over 10 weeks and claimed the lives of more than 18,000 individuals in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel's primary objective is the destruction of Hamas' tunnel network, as a substantial portion of it runs beneath schools, hospitals, and residential areas.
Criticism of Israeli Security
Israeli military, intelligence, and political officials have faced intense criticism for their failure to detect the attack in advance. Maj. Nir Dinar, a military spokesperson, explained that Israeli security services were unaware of the tunnel prior to October 7 because their border defenses were designed to detect tunnels intended to enter Israel.
Tunnel's Concealment and Hamas' Strategy
Dinar revealed that the tunnel's entrance, a circular cement opening leading to a cavernous passageway, was located under a garage, effectively concealing it from Israeli drones and satellite images. While the military was aware of Hamas' extensive tunnel network, they did not anticipate the militants' ability to execute their plans for a large-scale attack.
Erez Crossing and Hamas' Symbolic Victory
The Erez crossing, a heavily fortified facility that processed the movement of Palestinians into Israel for work, medical care, and transit to neighboring Jordan, held great symbolic value for Hamas. Despite being protected by security cameras, military patrols, and an adjacent military base, the crossing sustained significant damage on October 7 and remains closed.
Yahalom Unit's Discovery and Exploration
The Israeli military's special "Yahalom" unit, specializing in tunnel warfare, has been working to excavate the tunnel since its initial detection. They have discovered weapons inside the tunnel. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief military spokesman, confirmed that this is the largest tunnel found in Gaza to date.
Additional Tunnels and Ongoing Operations
Hagari disclosed that troops have identified at least two other "city-sized" tunnels of similar scope, which are still being mapped. The military plans to destroy the discovered tunnels and continue pursuing militants hiding in others. They are committed to rescuing their hostages, acknowledging the possibility that some may be held within the tunnels.
The discovery of the extensive tunnel network in Gaza highlights the challenges faced by the Israeli military in combating Hamas' underground infrastructure. The military's ongoing operations aim to eliminate these tunnels and bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
