Israeli Inspections Blamed for Slow Aid Delivery to Gaza
Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley highlighted the cumbersome process of aid delivery to Gaza due to Israeli inspections, leading to the rejection of essential humanitarian supplies.
Cairo, Egypt - Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley of the United States have shed light on the challenges hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. During a visit to the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, the senators witnessed firsthand the lengthy delays faced by hundreds of trucks carrying vital supplies.

Delays and Inspections
The senators attributed the delays primarily to the cumbersome Israeli inspection process, which they described as "totally broken." Trucks carrying aid are subjected to rigorous checks at the Israeli facility in Netzarim, often resulting in arbitrary rejections of essential humanitarian equipment. This process can take weeks, causing a significant backlog of aid at the border.
Humanitarian Crisis
The senators emphasized the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the majority of the population relies on aid for survival. With one in four Palestinians facing starvation and widespread hunger, the need for swift and efficient aid delivery is critical. However, the current restrictions imposed by Israel have exacerbated the crisis, leaving millions of Palestinians vulnerable.
Rejected Aid
Van Hollen and Merkley visited a warehouse in Rafah filled with rejected aid items, including oxygen cylinders, generators, tents, and medical kits. The reasons for rejection were often vague and unreasonable, such as the presence of metal poles in tents or scalpels in medical kits. This arbitrary process further compounds the challenges in providing essential supplies to the people of Gaza.
Recommendations
The senators called for a simplified process for aid delivery that addresses Israel's security concerns while also recognizing the urgency of the humanitarian crisis. They are currently formulating recommendations to improve the situation and ensure that aid reaches those in need.
Israeli Response
In response to the senators' concerns, Col. Elad Goren, a senior Israeli military official, acknowledged that security checks might be hindering aid delivery. However, he attributed the bottlenecks to international agencies and the United Nations, suggesting that they should increase manpower and resources. Goren maintained that the humanitarian situation in Gaza was under control and that there was sufficient food.
The senators' visit to the Rafah border crossing has brought international attention to the obstacles impeding aid delivery to Gaza. Their recommendations aim to streamline the process, ensuring that vital supplies reach the Palestinian population in a timely and efficient manner. Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza requires urgent action and cooperation from all parties involved.
