Israeli Airstrikes Hit Hezbollah Targets in Lebanon, Raising Tensions
Israeli air force strikes Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, leading to retaliatory rocket fire and heightened tensions amid ongoing cease-fire discussions in Gaza.
In a significant escalation, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on targets of the militant group Hezbollah deep inside Lebanon on Monday, February 26. The strikes, which occurred near the northeastern city of Baalbek, resulted in the deaths of at least two Hezbollah members, according to a group official. These airstrikes mark the deepest incursion into Lebanon since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas conflict over four months ago.

Heightened Tensions Along Lebanon-Israel Border
The Israeli airstrikes came shortly after Hezbollah claimed to have shot down an Israeli drone over its stronghold in southern Lebanon. In response, Hezbollah retaliated by firing approximately 60 Katyusha rockets towards an Israeli army division command in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in Syria. The Israeli military confirmed the rocket attacks from Lebanon on Monday afternoon.
Airstrikes Target Hezbollah Convoy
Lebanese security officials reported that the Israeli air force conducted three airstrikes on the outskirts of the village of Buday, near Baalbek. The strikes targeted a convoy of trucks in an area known as a Hezbollah stronghold. A Hezbollah official confirmed the strikes and reported the deaths of at least two group members. One of the strikes hit a warehouse for food products operated by Hezbollah's Sajjad Project, which provides goods at reduced prices in its stronghold.
Hezbollah Retaliates with Rocket Fire
In response to the airstrikes, Hezbollah retaliated by firing rockets towards Israel. One missile was intercepted by Israel and landed near a synagogue in a town close to Nazareth in northern Israel, causing no injuries or damage. Hezbollah later released the names and photographs of two of its fighters killed in the strikes, bringing the total number of Hezbollah casualties since October 8 to nearly 210.
Israeli Defense Minister Vows Continued Attacks
Despite ongoing cease-fire talks in Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has vowed to intensify attacks on Hezbollah even if a truce is reached with Hamas. Hezbollah's deputy leader, Shiekh Naim Kassem, warned that the group possesses a vast arsenal, including precision-guided missiles and explosive drones, and will retaliate more forcefully if Israel expands the conflict.
Diplomatic Efforts for a Ceasefire
Western diplomats have proposed several plans for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. These proposals involve Hezbollah withdrawing its forces several kilometers away from the border, along with an increased Lebanese army presence. Negotiations are also underway for Israeli forces to withdraw from disputed areas along the border, where Lebanon claims Israel occupies small patches of Lebanese territory.
Lebanon's Response to French Proposal
Lebanon's caretaker Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bouhabib, discussed a French proposal regarding the southern region with Prime Minister Najib Mikati. Lebanon is preparing a response to the proposal, which includes the disputed Chebaa Farms and Kfar Chouba hills captured by Israel from Syria in 1967. Lebanon maintains that these areas belong to Lebanon and demands Israel's withdrawal.
The airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon have significantly escalated tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border. While cease-fire talks are ongoing in Gaza, the situation remains volatile, with Hezbollah signaling its willingness to consider diplomatic proposals but insisting on a cease-fire in Gaza before any agreement in Lebanon.
