Israeli Airstrike Targets Displaced in Rafah, Gaza, Killing 22

In a devastating turn of events, an Israeli airstrike targeted the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Sunday, resulting in the tragic loss of 22 lives. The strike specifically hit tents housing displaced individuals, causing significant destruction and raising concerns about the safety of designated "humanitarian areas." The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has voiced fears that the death toll may rise as search and rescue operations persist in Rafah's Tal al-Sultan neighbourhood.

This attack follows a directive from the International Court of Justice two days prior, urging Israel to cease its military actions in Rafah. Despite this, Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, was reported to be in Rafah overseeing the "deepening of operations."

The airstrike occurred hours after Hamas launched a series of rockets towards Israel, marking the first long-range rocket attack since January. This act of defiance by Hamas showcases their resilience, despite the ongoing Israeli offensive that has lasted over seven months. The Israeli military confirmed that eight projectiles had been fired from Rafah, with some being intercepted.

A new agreement facilitated the entry of aid trucks into Gaza from southern Israel, aiming to circumvent the closed Rafah crossing with Egypt.
