High-Ranking Iranian General Killed in Israeli Airstrike in Damascus
An Israeli airstrike in Damascus killed a high-ranking Iranian general, Seyed Razi Mousavi, escalating tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border and sparking concerns of a wider regional conflict involving Iran-backed groups.
In a significant development, an Israeli airstrike on Monday targeted a Damascus neighbourhood, resulting in the death of a high-ranking Iranian general, according to Iranian state media. The deceased, Seyed Razi Mousavi, held a prominent position as a long-time adviser to the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Syria. This incident adds to the escalating tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, where clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have intensified, raising concerns about a potential regional spillover involving Iran-backed groups, reminiscent of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Targeted Strike in Sayida Zeinab Neighbourhood
The Israeli airstrike specifically hit the Sayida Zeinab neighbourhood, situated near a revered Shiite Muslim shrine. This information was confirmed by Iran's official news agency, IRNA, as well as the Britain-based opposition war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. IRNA highlighted the close relationship between Mousavi and General Qassim Soleimani, the former head of Iran's elite Quds Force, who was eliminated in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.
Limited Official Statements
At the time of reporting, neither the Israeli military nor Syrian state media had issued any official statements regarding the attack. While IRNA refrained from providing additional details about the incident, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that the Israeli military specifically targeted Mousavi after he entered a farm in the area, which allegedly served as one of several offices for Hezbollah. This Lebanese militant group, along with Iran and Russia, has played a crucial military role in supporting President Bashar Assad's government throughout the ongoing Syrian conflict.
History of Israeli Strikes in Syria
In recent years, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes on targets within government-controlled regions of war-torn Syria. Despite these actions, Israel typically refrains from acknowledging its airstrikes in Syria. However, when it does acknowledge them, Israel maintains that its primary objective is to target Iranian-backed groups that provide support to Assad's government.
