Israel Informs US of Planned Military Operation in Lebanon Amid Rising Tensions with Hezbollah
Israel informed US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about a planned military action in Lebanon, according to US officials. This call occurred on Tuesday, and the same day, an attack attributed to Israel resulted in the explosion of thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah militants. The communication was part of four discussions between Austin and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

US-Israel Communications
The two leaders had another conversation later on Tuesday, with the US being briefed after the attack. Additional calls took place on Wednesday and Sunday. Officials, speaking anonymously, noted that the US was not forewarned about a subsequent wave of attacks targeting walkie-talkie radios on Wednesday. These attacks led to at least 37 deaths, including two children, and injured around 3,000 people over two days.
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh confirmed the four calls but did not specify their timings. She stated that the US has not altered its military presence in the region despite the recent increase in attacks. During a call on Wednesday with Gallant, Austin discussed regional security and reiterated America's steadfast support for Israel against threats from Iran, Hezbollah, and other Iranian proxies.
Regional Security Concerns
Austin highlighted the US's dedication to deterring regional adversaries and reducing tensions. He also stressed the importance of achieving a cease-fire agreement to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Additionally, he advocated for a diplomatic resolution that would enable civilians on both sides of Israel's northern border with Lebanon to return home safely.
When questioned about a potential US military evacuation of American citizens in Lebanon, Singh mentioned that no request had been made by the State Department. However, US citizens in Lebanon were advised to maintain a low profile and stay alert regarding their security this week.
Evacuation Plans
State Department and White House officials acknowledged having contingency plans for evacuating Americans from Lebanon but indicated no immediate need for activation. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated, "We have evacuation plans available for places all over the world," adding that there is no current indication of an imminent need for such actions.
Other officials mentioned that US Navy ships with Marines are strategically positioned in the Mediterranean Sea to assist if required. The recent attacks on electronic devices appear to be part of a long-term Israeli operation aimed at targeting numerous Hezbollah members simultaneously, though civilians were also affected.
The situation remains tense as both nations navigate these complex security challenges. The ongoing dialogue between US and Israeli officials underscores their efforts to manage regional stability while addressing immediate threats.
