Israel vs Iran: Who Has The Stronger Military? A Comparison Of Military Strength
Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated dramatically after Friday's Israeli strikes, pushing the long-standing rivals closer to direct conflict, a scenario that could also entangle the United States.
As the threat of all-out war looms, a critical question emerges: How do their militaries compare?

Iran's Strengths and Weaknesses
On paper, Iran holds a numerical edge with a population of 88 million and vast territory, dwarfing Israel's 9 million people and compact size. But raw numbers don't tell the full story. Iran's military is split between its conventional army, tasked with border defense and traditional warfare, and the Revolutionary Guard-home to elite units like the Quds Force, missile command, and cyber operations. While the regular forces boast around 600,000 troops, the Guard commands roughly 200,000, specializing in asymmetric tactics and proxy warfare, according to a report in AP.
Yet Iran's conventional capabilities have suffered under relentless Israeli and U.S. operations, degrading its proxy networks and air defenses. Its arsenal is a patchwork of outdated Soviet-era gear, pre-1979 U.S. hardware, and more recent Russian additions. With an air force of ageing jets, Iran lags far behind Israel but compensates with drone warfare expertise, supplying Russia with Shahed attack drones for Ukraine.
Security remains a glaring vulnerability. Top commanders, including Revolutionary Guard leaders, have been killed in strikes-most in Friday's attack, which also claimed nuclear scientists. While Iran has enriched uranium to near-weapons-grade levels, weaponizing it would take additional time-a window Israel seems unwilling to grant, having already targeted nuclear and missile facilities.
| Area | Iran (Rank 16) | Israel (Rank 15) |
|---|---|---|
| Population | 88 million | 9 million |
| Active Troops | 610,000 | 170,000 |
| Reservists | 350,000 | 465,000 |
| Combat Vehicles | ~70,000 | 43,407 |
| Aircraft | 551 | 612 |
| Naval Vessels | 101 | 67 |
| Tech Level | Lower | Higher |
Israel's Military Edge
Israel's defense strategy blends cutting-edge technology, a robust domestic arms industry, and battle-tested forces. Though smaller in active-duty troops (170,000, plus 400,000 reserves), its military outclasses Iran in training, equipment, and regional experience.
A key advantage is Israel's multi-layered missile defense, developed with U.S. support, which intercepted most of Iran's ballistic missiles in a 2024 barrage. While not foolproof, the system has minimized damage from past attacks. Israel also maintains regional air superiority and a suspected (though unconfirmed) nuclear arsenal.
Crucially, Israel doesn't stand alone. The U.S. provides a formidable backstop, with an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, regional air bases, and thousands of troops. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes have weakened Iran's proxies-Hamas and Hezbollah-and crippled its air defenses, limiting Tehran's ability to retaliate effectively.
The Stakes
Iran has vowed massive retaliation, threatening not just Israel but also U.S. bases, with one official even pledging to expel American forces from the Middle East. Yet with its proxies diminished and defenses battered, Tehran's options may be narrowing. Israel, in turn, appears determined to prevent Iran from crossing nuclear red lines-even at the risk of wider war.
As the cycle of strikes and counterstrokes accelerates, the region teeters on the brink, with global consequences hanging in the balance.
