Israel Plans Retaliation After Iran's Missile Strike, Weighs Options
Israel's military chief, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, announced on Monday that Israel will retaliate against Iran's recent missile strike, which targeted the Nevatim air base, causing light damage. The statement comes in the wake of a significant escalation in hostilities, marking the first direct military assault by Iran on Israeli soil. This development follows a suspected Israeli operation in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals.

The attack from Iran involved a sophisticated array of hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. Despite this, the Israeli military reported a high success rate in intercepting these threats, with assistance from international allies including the United States, Britain, and France. According to official statements, 99% of the incoming drones and missiles were successfully neutralized.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been actively consulting with senior officials to deliberate over Israel's next moves. This comes amid international appeals urging Israel to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation. The incident intensifies the already volatile relationship between Israel and Iran, a tension that has been simmering since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.
The backdrop to this confrontation is the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, which has seen both sides suffer heavy casualties. The war, now entering its sixth month, was triggered by a severe attack from Hamas and Islamic Jihad on October 7, leading to significant loss of life and numerous kidnappings.
In response to queries about any potential Israeli countermeasures, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized that the United States is not involved in Israel's decision-making process regarding its response to the Iranian attack. Kirby stated that any information regarding Israel's plans would be disclosed by Israeli officials.
The international community watches closely as these developments unfold, with many leaders calling for de-escalation in hopes of averting further conflict in an already tense region.
