Israel Signals New Phase in Conflict as Tensions Rise with Hezbollah

Israel's Defence Minister has announced a "new phase" in the ongoing conflict, with recent events suggesting a potential escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. Explosions in Lebanon, allegedly caused by Israeli attacks, have heightened tensions. Diplomatic solutions seem increasingly unlikely as Israel aims to alter the situation in its northern region, where cross-border exchanges with Hezbollah have persisted since last October.

Israel Prepares for Conflict with Hezbollah

In recent developments, Israel has bolstered its military presence along the northern border. This includes deploying a significant fighting force, which previously engaged in intense combat in Gaza. The 98th Division, comprising thousands of troops, including paratroopers and elite commandos, has been positioned for operations near Lebanon. An anonymous official confirmed these troop movements.

Military Preparations and Strategic Shifts

As fighting in Gaza diminishes, Israel has redirected its focus towards Lebanon. The military has conducted drills along the border to prepare for potential conflict. Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin of Israel's Northern Command stated, "We are determined to change the security reality as soon as possible." This reflects a strategic shift towards addressing threats from Hezbollah.

The recent explosions in Lebanon involved sophisticated attacks on electronic devices, resulting in casualties and injuries. Retired Brig. Gen. Amir Avivi commented on the situation, saying, "You don't do something like that...and think war is not coming." He indicated that Israel is now prepared for war after months of restraint.

Political Rhetoric and Public Sentiment

Israeli leaders have intensified their rhetoric, signalling impatience with the current situation. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant declared a new phase of war focused on Hezbollah. The Israeli Cabinet has set the return of displaced northern residents as an official war goal, highlighting a firmer stance on security issues.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with US envoy Amos Hochstein to discuss regional tensions. According to an official source, Hochstein advised against escalating the conflict with Hezbollah. However, Netanyahu emphasised that a fundamental change in northern security is necessary before residents can safely return home.

Potential Outcomes and Public Opinion

The Israeli government has not yet decided on launching a major offensive in Lebanon. Much depends on Hezbollah's response and upcoming statements from its leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Public opinion in Israel appears supportive of stronger action against Hezbollah.

A poll by the Israeli Democracy Institute revealed that 67% of Jewish respondents favour intensifying responses to Hezbollah. Many support a comprehensive offensive targeting Lebanese infrastructure. Avivi noted societal pressure for decisive action unless Hezbollah withdraws from southern Lebanon.

While the situation remains tense, both sides face potential devastation if war ensues. The outcome will likely depend on diplomatic efforts and military strategies in the coming days.
