Israel PM Netanyahu Forms Emergency Unity Government, War Cabinet Amid Hamas Conflict
In the midst of the escalating conflict with Hamas, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader MK Benny Gantz, who also holds the positions of former army chief and defense minister, have reached a historic agreement to form an "emergency unity government." This development comes as the conflict with Hamas entered its fifth day, as reported by the BBC.
Under the terms of this agreement, Gantz will become an integral part of Netanyahu's government and join Israel's war cabinet. The war cabinet is a select group of ministers responsible for shaping the nation's strategy during the ongoing conflict with Hamas.

Gantz has emphasized that Israel's foremost priority at this critical juncture is to secure a victory in the war against Hamas. This shift in political dynamics and alliance-building underscores the gravity of the situation.
A statement from Gantz's National Unity party conveyed, "The sides agreed to form a war cabinet comprising PM Netanyahu, Benny Gantz, and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and during the fighting with Hamas in Gaza will not promote any unrelated policy or laws." Reuters reported this statement.
The Times of Israel reported that Netanyahu and Gantz held a private meeting at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv earlier in the day. In their discussions, Gantz had been advocating for the establishment of a compact war cabinet that possesses genuine influence over war management. He had also stressed the importance of including at least two opposition leaders with extensive military experience within the war cabinet.
The development unfolded as Israel intensified its military offensive against Gaza following a surprise attack by the militant group Hamas on Saturday. This ongoing conflict has resulted in a tragic loss of life, with over 2,000 casualties in both Gaza and Israel thus far.
Simultaneously, in the midst of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Gaza faced a dire humanitarian crisis as it was left without electricity, water, and internet services. The crisis was triggered by the depletion of fuel supplies at the region's sole power plant on Wednesday. This power outage came in the wake of Israel's decision to halt the supply of essential resources, including water, food, medicines, and other vital items to the Gaza Strip in response to the Hamas assault. The situation in the region remains a matter of international concern, with efforts to de-escalate the conflict and address the urgent humanitarian needs of the affected population becoming increasingly pressing.
