Israel's Netanyahu Dispatches Mossad Director to Qatar for Ceasefire Negotiations in Gaza Conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorised the Mossad chief to join ceasefire discussions in Qatar, indicating progress in Gaza conflict talks. The exact timing of David Barnea's trip to Doha for indirect negotiations with Hamas remains unclear. His involvement suggests that senior Israeli figures, crucial for approving any deal, are now engaged in the process.

Netanyahu Sends Mossad Chief to Qatar Talks

Negotiations, facilitated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar, have faced repeated delays since the war began. Only one brief ceasefire has been achieved in 15 months of conflict. Netanyahu is determined to dismantle Hamas' military capabilities in Gaza, while Hamas demands a complete Israeli troop withdrawal from the devastated region.

Hostage Situation and International Pressure

The families of approximately 100 hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack are urging Netanyahu to secure their release. The recent recovery of two hostages' bodies has intensified concerns about their safety. Hamas claims uncertainty over who remains alive after months of intense fighting.

"Return with an agreement that ensures the return of all hostages, down to the last one — the living for rehabilitation and the deceased for proper burial in their homeland," stated a group representing some hostages' families. Both Israel and Hamas face pressure from outgoing US President Joe Biden and incoming President Donald Trump to finalise a deal before January 20.

US Involvement and Ceasefire Challenges

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently expressed optimism about reaching a deal soon, hoping to conclude it before the Trump administration takes over. However, similar optimism has been voiced by US officials multiple times over the past year without success.

Key issues in negotiations include which hostages would be freed first under a phased ceasefire agreement, which Palestinian prisoners would be released, and how far Israeli troops would withdraw from Gaza's population centres. In November 2023, a truce resulted in over 100 hostages being freed.

Casualties and Humanitarian Concerns

An airstrike on Saturday killed a 5-year-old girl and two male relatives in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza. Her body was seen at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital by an AP team. Another strike killed at least eight Palestinians, including children and women, at a school-turned-shelter in northern Gaza.

The Israeli military claimed it targeted a Hamas command centre at a former school in Jabaliya but provided no evidence. Meanwhile, Gazan Health Ministry reported at least 32 bodies arriving at hospitals within 24 hours.

A Civil Defence spokesperson confirmed four deaths on a street in Gaza City due to another strike. "I ask the world, do you hear us? Do we exist?" questioned Hamza Saleh from Khan Younis as displaced residents struggled for food aid amid growing hunger.

Netanyahu's office announced that Shin Bet's head and military advisers are also heading to Qatar following discussions with defence officials and negotiators representing both outgoing and incoming US administrations. A photo was released showing Netanyahu with Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy to the Middle East.
