Israel's Netanyahu Dispatches Mossad Director to Qatar for Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorised the Mossad chief to join ceasefire discussions in Qatar, indicating progress in Gaza conflict negotiations. Netanyahu's office announced this on Saturday, though the exact timing of David Barnea's visit to Doha remains uncertain. His involvement signifies that senior Israeli figures, crucial for approving any deal, are now participating in the talks.

Netanyahu Sends Mossad Chief to Qatar Talks

The negotiations, mediated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar, have faced numerous delays. Only one brief ceasefire has been achieved in the 15-month conflict, occurring early in the fighting. Netanyahu is determined to dismantle Hamas' military capabilities in Gaza, while Hamas demands a complete Israeli withdrawal from the heavily damaged region.

High-Level Involvement in Ceasefire Talks

In addition to Barnea, Israel is sending Shin Bet's head and military and political advisers to Qatar. This decision followed Netanyahu's meeting with his defence minister, security leaders, and negotiators representing both outgoing and incoming US administrations. A photo released by Netanyahu's office shows him with Steve Witkoff, President-elect Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, who was also in Qatar recently.

Families of around 100 hostages still held in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 attack are urging Netanyahu to secure their release. The recent recovery of two hostages' bodies has heightened concerns about their safety. Hamas claims uncertainty over who remains alive after months of intense fighting.

Pressure from International Leaders

Both Israel and Hamas face pressure from outgoing US President Joe Biden and incoming President Trump to finalise a deal before January 20. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated this week that an agreement is "very close," hoping it concludes before Trump's administration takes over. However, similar optimism has been expressed by US officials multiple times over the past year.

Key issues in the discussions include which hostages will be freed first under a phased ceasefire plan, which Palestinian prisoners will be released, and how far Israeli troops will withdraw from Gaza's populated areas. The conflict began with an attack by Hamas and other groups that killed about 1,200 people and took approximately 250 hostages into Gaza.

A truce in November 2023 resulted in over 100 hostages being freed. Since then, others have been rescued or their remains recovered over the past year. The ongoing negotiations aim to address these complex issues and bring about a lasting resolution to the conflict.
