Israel Forces Eliminate Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict
Israeli forces have reportedly killed Yahya Sinwar, a top Hamas leader, in Gaza. Sinwar was a key figure behind last year's attack on Israel, which led to the ongoing conflict. The military stated that troops unknowingly encountered him during a battle, later identifying his body among the debris. Israeli leaders hailed this as a significant victory and urged Hamas to release around 100 hostages still held captive.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasised that the conflict is not over. He insisted on maintaining control over Gaza to prevent Hamas from rearming, suggesting prolonged hostilities. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant addressed Hamas fighters, urging them to surrender and release the hostages. Despite Sinwar's death being a setback for Hamas, the group has shown resilience throughout the conflict.
Hamas Leadership and Military Operations
Sinwar had been leading Hamas in Gaza for years, closely linked to its military operations. He rose to prominence in July after Ismail Haniyeh's death in an Israeli strike in Tehran. Recently, Israel has targeted several senior figures from Hamas and Hezbollah through airstrikes. Although Israel claimed to have killed Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas' military wing, the group denied it.
Sinwar's death was accidental; troops stumbled upon him during combat in Rafah. An Israeli official noted that Sinwar was seen entering a building, which was then hit by tank fire. Although they suspected high-ranking Hamas officials were nearby, Sinwar wasn't specifically targeted that day.
Military Confirmation and Reactions
Photos online showed a man resembling Sinwar with severe injuries, partially buried in rubble. Israeli security confirmed these images were taken at the scene. The military reported three militants were killed in the operation, with one identified as Sinwar through dental records and fingerprints; DNA tests are ongoing.
Netanyahu stated that Israel had "settled its account" with Sinwar but acknowledged that their mission isn't complete. He highlighted the importance of rescuing hostages and offered safe passage out of Gaza for any Hamas member who surrendered weapons and helped return hostages.
Israel's campaign against Hamas began after militants attacked southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing about 1,200 people and abducting around 250 others. Approximately 100 hostages remain in Gaza, with some believed dead. The offensive has resulted in over 42,000 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which reports women and children comprise more than half of these fatalities.
Recent Strikes and Civilian Impact
On Thursday, an Israeli strike hit a school sheltering displaced Palestinians, killing at least 28 people as per Gaza's Health Ministry. Fares Abu Hamza from the ministry's emergency unit reported the dead included a woman and four children. The Israeli military claimed it targeted a command centre operated by Hamas and Islamic Jihad within the school but could not verify those present.
Israel has frequently struck shelters housing displaced individuals in Gaza. While claiming precision strikes on militants, these attacks often result in civilian casualties, including women and children.
