Israel-Hamas war: A look at the toll in numbers

The latest Israel-Hamas war has quickly become the deadliest and most destructive of the five wars fought between the sides since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 from the Palestinian Authority. The fighting erupted on Oct 7 when Hamas carried out a bloody attack in southern Israel. Since then, Israel has relentlessly pounded the Gaza Strip with airstrikes that have wrought unprecedented destruction, flattening entire neighborhoods.

The Human Toll

As of Nov 4, the Gaza Health Ministry and Israeli officials, as well as international observers and aid groups, reported that 9,485 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza and 147 in the West Bank. In Israel, 1,400 people were killed, including 28 Israeli soldiers killed since the start of the ground offensive.

The number of injured is also staggering. 24,173 Palestinians were injured in Gaza and 2,200 in the West Bank, while 5,400 Israelis were injured.

Displacement and Destruction

The war has also caused widespread displacement. Over 1.5 million Palestinians have been displaced in Gaza, and 250,000 Israelis have been displaced.

The destruction in Gaza has been particularly severe. 33,960 residential units have been destroyed, and at least 241 soldiers and civilians are being held hostage.
