Israel and Hamas Negotiators Report Progress Towards Ceasefire Agreement After Months of Deadlock
After a prolonged stalemate, Israel and Hamas are nearing a ceasefire to conclude their 14-month conflict. Recent mediation efforts by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt have shown increased willingness from both parties to finalise an agreement. Hamas has indicated readiness to be more flexible regarding the timing of Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza. Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, stated that a deal is closer than ever.

Officials have expressed optimism, though they acknowledge that crucial details remain unresolved. This shift in sentiment is attributed to several factors. Israel has significantly weakened Hamas during the conflict. Additionally, Hezbollah's ceasefire with Israel has left Hamas more isolated, and Iran, a key supporter of both groups, has faced setbacks, including the fall of its ally, Syria's Bashar Assad.
Emerging Ceasefire Agreement
The proposed agreement would unfold in phases, involving a cessation of hostilities, an exchange of captives, and increased aid to Gaza. According to Egyptian and Hamas officials, the initial phase would last six to eight weeks. During this period, Hamas would release about 30 hostages, including three or four dual U.S.-Israeli citizens. In return, Israel would free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Israel claims that Hamas holds 100 hostages, with over one-third presumed dead. The deal also includes a substantial boost in aid to Gaza, which has suffered a humanitarian crisis during the conflict. Approximately 90% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced multiple times, with severe hunger reported across the region.
Humanitarian Aid and Troop Withdrawal
The agreement aims to reopen Gaza's Rafah crossing with Egypt, closed since Israeli troops invaded in May. This crossing is vital as it serves as the main exit point for Palestinians wishing to travel abroad and is not controlled by Israel. Mediators are considering reinstating a 2005 agreement allowing the Palestinian Authority to manage the crossing with EU observers.
During the first phase of the ceasefire, Israeli troops would withdraw from some Palestinian areas, enabling many Palestinians to return home. However, Israeli forces would remain along the Philadelphi corridor on Gaza's border with Egypt.
Negotiations for Permanent Peace
As part of ongoing negotiations during the preliminary ceasefire, discussions will focus on a permanent resolution. This includes ending the war entirely, withdrawing all Israeli troops from Gaza, and releasing remaining hostages and bodies held by Hamas.
Further talks will address governance in Gaza and plans for rebuilding after extensive destruction. Both outgoing President Biden's administration and incoming President-elect Trump's team have expressed interest in concluding a deal before January 20th.
The evolving situation reflects a cautious optimism among involved parties as they work towards a peaceful resolution after months of conflict.
