Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant Promises Lethal and Surprising Response to Iran's Missile Attack
Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, issued a stern warning about the country's response to a recent Iranian missile attack. He described the forthcoming retaliation as "lethal" and "surprising." Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Joe Biden engaged in their first conversation in seven weeks. This dialogue occurred amid escalating tensions in Gaza and potential Israeli actions against Iran.

In northern Gaza, intense fighting has been reported in Jabaliya. Israeli forces have conducted several operations there, targeting militants who regroup after each assault. The entire region, including Gaza City, has faced significant destruction and isolation by Israeli forces since late last year. Residents of Jabaliya, a refugee camp established during the 1948 war, are trapped in their homes due to ongoing military operations.
Escalating Conflict with Iran
On October 1, Iran launched dozens of missiles at Israel, intensifying the conflict between the two nations. Israel is currently deliberating its response to this attack, which was partially thwarted with U.S. assistance. However, President Biden has expressed opposition to any retaliatory strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Gallant emphasised that Israel's response would be precise and unexpected. "Our strike will be lethal, precise and mostly, surprising. They won't understand what happened and how. They will see the results," he stated during a visit to an intelligence unit. He further warned that those who attack Israel would face consequences.
Violence Spreads Beyond Gaza
The conflict's impact extends beyond Gaza. In northern Israel, a rocket fired from Lebanon killed two people in Kiryat Shmona. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for this attack, stating it targeted "a gathering of enemy forces." Additionally, six individuals were stabbed in Hadera on Wednesday; the attacker was later arrested.
Ofir Yehezkeli, acting mayor of Kiryat Shmona, confirmed that the victims were a couple walking their dogs when the rocket struck. This incident highlights the broader regional instability resulting from ongoing hostilities.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The situation in Gaza remains dire as Israeli operations continue to devastate the area. Palestinian officials report that dozens have died due to these actions. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, prompting Israel to expand its ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Mohamed Awda, a resident of Jabaliya, described the dire conditions: "It's like hell. We can't get out." He explained that three bodies lay outside his home but could not be retrieved due to continuous fighting. Awda also mentioned that drones fire at anyone attempting to leave their homes.
The ongoing violence threatens to close three hospitals in northern Gaza, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation over a year into the war with Hamas.
The recent developments underscore the complex and volatile nature of the conflict involving Israel, Iran, and other regional actors. As tensions rise and violence spreads across borders, diplomatic efforts remain crucial to preventing further escalation and addressing humanitarian needs.
