Israel Confirms Killing of Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza Operations

Israeli forces have reportedly killed Yahya Sinwar, a prominent Hamas leader, during ongoing operations in Gaza. Sinwar, a key figure in last year's attack on Israel, was discovered dead in the rubble after a battle. His death marks a significant setback for Hamas, although the group has not yet confirmed it. The Israeli military identified Sinwar through DNA tests conducted on bodies found during recent operations.

Israel Confirms Yahya Sinwars Death in Gaza

Impact of Sinwar's Death

Foreign Minister Israel Katz described Sinwar's death as both a "military and moral achievement" for Israel. He suggested it could lead to the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant urged Hamas fighters to surrender and release the hostages. Sinwar had been a top target for Israel since the conflict began over a year ago due to his role in orchestrating attacks.

Sinwar's demise appears to have occurred during an unplanned encounter rather than a targeted strike. An Israeli security official noted that troops stumbled upon him during a battle. Photos circulating online show a man resembling Sinwar with severe injuries, partially buried under debris. These images were confirmed by Israeli security personnel at the scene.

Background and Context

Sinwar had been imprisoned by Israel from the late 1980s until 2011, during which he received treatment for brain cancer. This provided Israeli authorities with detailed medical records. He was appointed as Hamas's top leader in July after Ismail Haniyeh's assassination in Tehran. Israel also claims to have targeted Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas's military wing, though Hamas asserts he survived.

The report of Sinwar's death coincides with ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza, particularly in Jabaliya refugee camp. On Thursday, an Israeli strike hit a school sheltering displaced Palestinians, resulting in at least 28 deaths, including women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The military claimed the school housed a command centre for Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Humanitarian Concerns

Israel has faced criticism for strikes on civilian shelters, though it maintains its focus is on militants. The conflict began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and abducting about 250 others. Since then, over 42,000 Palestinians have died according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which includes both civilians and combatants.

Northern Gaza has experienced severe destruction since Israel's ground invasion nearly a year ago. Many residents fled following evacuation orders, but approximately 400,000 remain despite dire conditions. Recent aid shipments were allowed into northern Gaza after U.S. pressure on Israel to address humanitarian needs.

The Jabaliya camp has been repeatedly targeted by Israeli forces due to militant activity there. The densely populated area dates back to the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation and remains a focal point of military operations against regrouping militants.
