Israel And Hezbollah Ceasefire Results In Return Of Displaced People To Southern Lebanon

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, initiated on November 27, 2024, appears to be holding as residents cautiously return to southern Lebanon. This truce aims to halt 14 months of escalating conflict that threatened to draw in Iran and the United States. However, the ceasefire does not cover the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where Israeli strikes have recently resulted in civilian casualties.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli troops remain stationed in southern Lebanon, with their withdrawal contingent on the truce's enforcement. The Lebanese military has advised returning residents to avoid frontline areas until Israeli forces have fully withdrawn. The conflict has caused significant destruction, with Lebanese health officials reporting over 3,760 deaths due to Israeli actions, many of whom were civilians. In contrast, Israel has suffered over 70 deaths, primarily civilians and soldiers engaged in southern Lebanon.

Ceasefire Brings Hope

The truce was brokered by the U.S. and France and mandates a two-month halt in fighting. It requires Hezbollah's withdrawal from southern Lebanon and prescribes the return of Israeli troops to their side of the border. Additionally, it calls for deploying Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers in the south, with an international panel led by the U.S. monitoring compliance. Israel retains the right to respond to any violation by Hezbollah.

The ceasefire offers hope to 1.2 million displaced Lebanese and Israelis who fled homes near the border. Displaced residents are beginning to return to southern Lebanon amid celebratory gestures among the Shiite community, viewing this as a victory for Hezbollah. However, the Israeli military warns against returning to certain villages due to ongoing military presence and operational dangers.

Ongoing Concerns

Israel claims significant successes during the conflict, including eliminating Hezbollah's leadership and dismantling its militant infrastructure. However, Hezbollah's persistent resistance and continued rocket attacks have tarnished Israel's image despite its military capacity.

The mood in Israel remains cautious amid concerns that the ceasefire may not sufficiently curb Hezbollah's threat or address Gaza's situation and hostage fates. Returning displaced communities to pre-war normalcy could take months due to extensive damage and lingering fear of unresolved tensions.
