Israel Intensifies Military Operations in Lebanon and Gaza Amid Rising Tensions and Combat Deaths

Israel intensified its military operations on Wednesday, launching a ground incursion into Lebanon against Hezbollah, resulting in the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers. Concurrently, airstrikes in Gaza claimed dozens of lives, including children. These actions followed Iran's ballistic missile attack on Israel the previous day, escalating tensions in the region. Iran supports both Hezbollah and Hamas, which governs Gaza.

Israel Escalates Military Actions in Lebanon and Gaza

In southern Lebanon, seven Israeli soldiers were killed in two separate Hezbollah attacks. This marked one of the highest casualties for Israeli forces in recent months. Earlier, a 22-year-old Israeli captain was reported as the first combat death since the incursion began. The attacks occurred just before Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year.

Escalating Conflict and Regional Tensions

In Gaza, Israeli ground and air operations targeted a city heavily impacted by ongoing conflict. Palestinian medical officials reported at least 51 fatalities, including women and children. Israel continues to target what it claims are militant positions across Gaza nearly a year after Hamas's attack on October 7 initiated the war.

Late Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike hit an apartment building near Beirut's city centre, marking the second strike on central Beirut within a week. The attack in Bashoura district resulted in two deaths and 11 injuries. Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV stated that the strike targeted their health unit.

International Reactions and Military Movements

The recent military actions have heightened fears of a broader conflict potentially involving Iran and the US, which has deployed military assets to support Israel. In Syria, an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building in Damascus on Wednesday evening, killing three people and injuring at least three others. An AP journalist noted that the missile targeted the building's ground floor.

Hezbollah fighters reportedly engaged with Israeli troops at two locations inside Lebanon near the border. The Israeli military confirmed that ground forces supported by airstrikes killed militants in close-range encounters but did not specify locations.

Humanitarian Impact and Evacuations

The Lebanese army confirmed that Israeli forces advanced approximately 400 metres across the border before withdrawing. This was their first acknowledgment of the incursion. The Israeli military has advised residents of around 50 villages and towns to evacuate north of the Awali River, significantly beyond a UN-declared buffer zone established after their 2006 conflict with Hezbollah.

Israeli strikes have resulted in over 1,000 deaths in Lebanon over two weeks, with nearly a quarter being women and children according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has pledged to continue rocket attacks into Israel until a ceasefire is achieved in Gaza.

Diplomatic Strains and Calls for Ceasefire

Israel declared UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres persona non grata following his failure to unequivocally condemn Iran's missile attack on Tuesday night. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticised Guterres for his response. Guterres had issued a statement urging for an end to escalating conflicts in the Middle East.

The Health Ministry in Gaza reported at least 51 fatalities and 82 injuries from an operation in Khan Younis that began early Wednesday. Records from European Hospital indicated that seven women and 12 children were among those killed.

On October 7, Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took around 250 hostages. About 100 hostages remain unreleased, with around 65 believed to be alive. Israel's retaliatory actions have resulted in over 41,000 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

Iran launched at least 180 missiles into Israel as retaliation for recent Israeli strikes against Hezbollah. Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel since the onset of the war in Gaza as a show of solidarity with Hamas.
