Islamic State-Linked Rebels Kill 10 and Abduct Others in Eastern Congo Attack

At least 10 individuals lost their lives, and an unknown number were kidnapped in eastern Congo by extremist rebels linked to the Islamic State, according to a military spokesperson on Monday. The attack occurred in Batangi-Mbau, North Kivu province, on Sunday night. The Allied Democratic Forces, an IS-affiliate in the region, were responsible for the assault, as stated by spokesperson Mak Hazukay.

Several homes were set ablaze during the attack. "We call on the population to be vigilant and we assure them that we will drive the enemy out of our territory," Hazukay declared. This incident is part of a long-standing struggle with armed violence in eastern Congo, where over 120 groups vie for power, land, and valuable minerals.

Escalating Violence and Displacement

The ongoing conflict has forced nearly 7 million people to flee their homes. In recent years, attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces have increased and expanded towards Goma, eastern Congo's main city, and neighbouring Ituri province. Rights organisations and the United Nations have accused the ADF of killing hundreds and abducting many more, including numerous children.

Earlier this month, at least 13 people were killed by the ADF in another village in North Kivu. The region has been plagued by violence for decades as various groups fight for control or attempt to protect their communities. Some of these armed factions have been implicated in mass killings.

The situation remains dire as extremist activities continue to threaten the safety and stability of eastern Congo. Efforts to curb the violence are ongoing, but challenges persist due to the complex dynamics involving numerous armed groups with different agendas.
