Is Iran’s New Supreme Leader Ayatollah Alireza Arafi Killed?

Uncertainty is growing over Iran's leadership after US President Donald Trump claimed that recent American and Israeli airstrikes not only killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, but also eliminated the individuals Washington believed were next in line to succeed him.

Speaking in a phone interview with ABC News, Trump described the strike as highly effective, saying it had "knocked out most of the candidates." He suggested that those previously seen as likely successors were no longer alive. His remarks, however, have raised more questions than answers about who is currently leading Iran.

What About Alireza Arafi?

Following Khamenei's reported assassination, senior cleric Alireza Arafi was named interim Supreme Leader. Soon after, social media posts and some Israeli reports began circulating claims that Arafi, too, had been killed in subsequent airstrikes.

As of now, there is no official confirmation from Iranian authorities or major international news organisations that Arafi has died. Iranian state media has not announced his death, and there has been no formal acknowledgment from Tehran regarding such claims.

The lack of clarity has created confusion similar to the early hours following Khamenei's killing, when reports emerged from foreign sources before being confirmed inside Iran.

Iranian state media has confirmed that several senior figures were killed in the joint US-Israel operation targeting Khamenei's compound. Among them were:

These deaths alone represent a major shift in Iran's power structure and have intensified speculation about succession plans.

Leadership in Question

Trump initially suggested the United States had a clear understanding of who might lead Iran after Khamenei. However, he later implied that the airstrike had removed those very individuals from contention.

If accurate, this would suggest a dramatic disruption to Iran's leadership chain. But without official statements from Tehran, it remains uncertain whether Arafi is alive and serving in his interim role or whether further leadership changes have occurred behind the scenes.
