Is Canada Losing Its Edge As A Top Choice For Indian Students?

The interest among Indian students in Canadian education has notably decreased, according to recent data. From July to October 2023, the Canadian government processed over 40% fewer study permit applications from Indian nationals compared to the same period in 2022, dropping from nearly 146,000 to fewer than 87,000 applications. This indicates a significant decline of around 60,000 student visas processed for Indian students during that period.

Is Canada Losing Its Edge As A Top Choice For Indian Students?

The drop in demand comes despite a preceding 25% increase in study permit applications from Indian students from January to June 2023 compared to 2022. However, a recent decision by the Canadian government to nearly double the financial requirement for living expenses for incoming international students starting January 1, 2024, might have contributed to this decline. Now, applicants need to show they have 20,635 Canadian dollars ($15,181) in addition to covering their first year of tuition and travel expenses.

The decrease in demand later in 2023 was largely attributed to Indian students expressing their challenges in Canada on social media, particularly highlighting the high cost of living and unfulfilled opportunities. Reports showed a surge in articles discussing housing issues in Canada during April to August 2023, with a fivefold increase compared to the previous year. Around 30% of this content was flagged as negative, frequently citing financial difficulties and unemployment among Indian students.

Specific instances, such as students from Punjab sharing concerns about exorbitant house rents forcing them into cramped living situations, gained attention. Many students reported struggling to afford basic necessities and seeking financial support from their families back home. Social media accounts revealed instances of students sharing living spaces with multiple others due to housing shortages.

The ApplyBoard report warned of a potential long-term depression in demand for Canadian education among Indian students if conditions in Canada persist. However, despite strained India-Canada relations following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statements in September 2023, most study permit applications from Indian students between August and November were processed within three weeks, suggesting prioritization by Canada's Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship department.

Currently, out of the 800,000 international students studying in Canada, 320,000 are from India, with Punjab contributing about 70% of this number. These international students contribute significantly to Canada's economy, generating more than 22 billion Canadian dollars ($16 billion) annually and supporting over 200,000 jobs.

The insights from ApplyBoard propose that decisive policies prioritizing students could lead to a potential return to 10 to 20% year-over-year growth in demand from Indian students for Canadian education.
