Is Canada Harbouring Khalistani Extremists? Here's What India’s Envoy Says

Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, has made serious allegations regarding the Canadian government's involvement with Khalistani extremists. In a recent interview with Canada-based CTV News, Verma claimed that Khalistani extremists and terrorists are "deep assets" of Canada's Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), although he did not present any direct evidence to support his claim.

Allegations Against Justin Trudeau's Government

Verma accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's administration of consistently encouraging Khalistani extremists. He emphasised that these extremists, many of whom are Canadian citizens, challenge India's sovereignty while being supported by Canada. Verma remarked, "The Trudeau government encourages Khalistani extremists all the time."

Tensions Over Hardeep Singh Nijjar's Murder

This comes in the wake of escalating tensions between India and Canada after the Trudeau government alleged that Indian agents were involved in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has vehemently denied the accusations, calling them "absurd" and "politically motivated." Trudeau recently stated that the allegations were based on intelligence rather than hard evidence, further straining relations between the two nations.

India's Core Concerns

During the interview, Verma urged the Canadian government to address India's core concerns sincerely. He expressed frustration over Canada's apparent alliance with Khalistani groups, stating, "We only want the Canadian regime to understand my core concerns rather than being bedfellows with those trying to challenge Indian sovereignty."

Pro-Khalistani Elements in Canada

Verma also pointed out that the pro-Khalistani activists in Canada are Canadian citizens, not Indian, and no nation should allow its citizens to threaten the sovereignty of another country. "What happens in India will be decided by Indian citizens, not by Canadian citizens," he added.

Denial of Canada's Allegations

Responding to the murder allegations against him, Verma strongly denied any involvement in directing or coercing individuals to gather information on pro-Khalistani activists, including Nijjar. He clarified that monitoring pro-Khalistani elements is a matter of national interest for India, and the information gathered comes from open sources like newspapers and social media, without any covert operations.

Diplomatic Fallout

The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada has deteriorated following the murder investigation. Canada's government recently designated senior Indian diplomats as "persons of interest" in the Nijjar case, prompting India to recall its diplomats and expel six Canadian diplomats in return.

Despite the growing tensions, India continues to demand that Canada provide concrete evidence supporting the allegations, while simultaneously calling for stronger action against anti-India Khalistani groups operating within Canada.
