Iraq Recalls Ambassador from Iran Over Deadly Strikes in Irbil
Iraq has recalled its ambassador from Iran and summoned Irans chargé daffaires in Baghdad to protest Iranian strikes on northern Iraq that killed several civilians. The strikes, which Iran claims targeted Israeli spy headquarters and Islamic State group positions, have drawn strong condemnation from the Iraqi government, which called them a blatant violation of Iraqs sovereignty.
In a strong response to Iran's missile strikes on northern Iraq, the Iraqi government has taken decisive action by recalling its ambassador from Tehran and summoning Iran's chargé d'affaires in Baghdad for consultations. The Iranian strikes, which resulted in the tragic loss of civilian lives, have been condemned by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry as a blatant violation of Iraq's sovereignty and a contravention of international law. The ministry's statement emphasizes that such actions severely threaten the security and stability of the region.

Iranian Strikes Target Kurdish Region, Syria
On Monday night, Iran launched a series of missile attacks targeting locations in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq and northern Syria. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for the strikes, asserting that they targeted an alleged Israeli "spy headquarters" near the US Consulate in Irbil, as well as positions linked to the extremist Islamic State (IS) group in Syria's Idlib province. However, the Iraqi government has vehemently rejected Iran's claims, with Qassim al-Araji, the national security adviser to Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, dismissing them as baseless.
Heightened Tensions and Regional Concerns
The Iranian strikes come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, coinciding with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Fears of a wider spillover of the Gaza conflict have intensified, adding to the already volatile situation. Additionally, the recent suicide bombings targeting a commemoration for an Iranian general slain in a US drone strike have further strained regional relations.
Iran's Response and Justification
In response to the attacks, Iran's Revolutionary Guard stated that the strikes were carried out in accordance with a demand made by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They asserted that they will continue their actions until their perceived enemies regret their actions. Iranian state media quoted Gen Hassan Hassanzadeh, a commander of the Revolutionary Guard, as saying that the strikes were a response to a demand made by the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Additional Attacks and Regional Reactions
In a separate development, Iran launched attacks using missiles and drones against bases belonging to the militant group Jaish al-Adl, which operates across the border in Pakistan. Pakistan has yet to acknowledge the attack. Meanwhile, the United States has condemned Iran's missile strikes, describing them as reckless. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani defended the strikes as necessary for defending the country's sovereignty and security, countering terrorism, and punishing those who threaten Iran's security.
Protests and Prison Strike Attempt
In response to the attacks, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Irbil to express their outrage and demand accountability. In northwest Syria, a missile strike hit an area housing teenage detainees at the Sinaa prison in Hassakeh, where hundreds of IS fighters are incarcerated. The strike caused minor injuries and sparked an unsuccessful prison break attempt.
The Iranian strikes on northern Iraq and Syria have ignited a diplomatic crisis between Iraq and Iran, further escalating tensions in the region. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging restraint and calling for peaceful resolutions to avoid further destabilization.
