Iran War Escalation: US Deploys 3,500 Marines and Amphibious Assault Ship USS Tripoli

The United States has expanded its military footprint in West Asia as the conflict involving Iran intensifies, sending around 3,500 marines and sailors aboard USS Tripoli (LHA 7). US Central Command said the amphibious assault ship reached its assigned operational area on March 27 after sailing from its base in Japan.

This deployment places one of the largest American amphibious assault ships inside an active combat zone while Operation Epic Fury continues. Central Command has said that since the operation began on February 28, American forces have hit more than 11,000 targets, including numerous Iranian naval and military sites across the region.

USS Tripoli deployment and US military presence in West Asia

Central Command has reported that over 150 Iranian vessels have been damaged or destroyed under Operation Epic Fury. The list of targets also includes locations tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, air defence systems, missile launch positions, naval platforms, and facilities used for weapons manufacturing and support activities inside Iran and nearby areas.

The scale of operations is reflected in the range of sites struck and the tempo of attacks. These actions are taking place while tensions stay high following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Diplomats from Washington and Tehran have continued to engage, but the conflict has not eased, and military activity has remained intense.

USS Tripoli and US military presence in West Asia conflict

The arrival of USS Tripoli has added to an already large United States force in the Middle East, where about 50,000 American troops are stationed. Central Command images show personnel in combat gear, wearing helmets and goggles, as marines and sailors prepare to support a wider range of regional missions.

A post on X from Central Command stated, "US Sailors and Marines aboard USS Tripoli (LHA 7) arrived in the US Central Command area of responsibility, March 27. The America-class amphibious assault ship serves as the flagship for the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group / 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, composed of about 3,500 Sailors and Marines in addition to transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious assault and tactical assets."

USS Tripoli role in Iran conflict and possible ground invasion

Media reports have highlighted that USS Tripoli is one of the most modern ships in the United States Navy. The vessel can handle F-35 Lightning II jets along with various helicopters and support aircraft. This capability allows air operations and amphibious missions to be launched from the same platform in the conflict zone.

With the latest move, USS Tripoli now operates alongside nuclear-powered Nimitz-class and Ford-class aircraft carriers already deployed in the region. The United States has also positioned extra transport and attack aircraft to strengthen its military presence, signalling a readiness to support air, sea, and amphibious operations if required.

The build-up around Iran has raised questions about whether Washington is preparing for a possible ground operation. A report in The Wall Street Journal said the new forces are meant to give US President Donald Trump more military choices as the Middle East fighting, triggered by the February 28 US-Israeli strikes on Iran, continues to intensify.

The Wall Street Journal report added that these additional marines would operate alongside thousands of paratroopers and other marines already deployed across the region. According to the report, the troops are expected to be placed within striking range of Iran and key points such as Kharg Island, an important oil-export hub off the Iranian coast.

Despite the larger force, Trump has repeatedly said that sending United States ground troops into direct combat against Iran is not planned. Officials have not disclosed the exact locations where the new units from USS Tripoli and related formations will remain based, even as diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran continue under heightened tensions.
