Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply after US President Donald Trump set a strict Tuesday deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

He warned that if Iran fails to comply or reach an agreement, the US could target its power infrastructure, saying Iran would have "no power plants" without a deal.

The warning follows an earlier 48-hour ultimatum and comes amid continued military activity in the region, including strikes in Iran and Lebanon and a reported drone attack on an oil site in Kuwait.

Trump has also emphasised that the conflict is centred on Iran's nuclear ambitions, stating that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. At the same time, he noted that Iran is "not as strong as before," although he acknowledged that its forces remain capable.

Iran Pushes Back, Talks Continue

Iran has rejected the US-backed ceasefire proposal, calling it unrealistic and refusing to give in to pressure. Instead, it has put forward its own response, which includes demands such as ending regional conflicts, ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, lifting sanctions, and supporting reconstruction efforts.

According to reports, Tehran has shared its response through Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator. While Trump described Iran's proposal as "significant," he said it still falls short of expectations.

The White House has also confirmed that a 45-day ceasefire plan is under consideration, though it has not yet been approved. Meanwhile, Trump provided an update on the recently rescued US airmen, saying they are injured but recovering well, and described the rescue mission as rare and highly risky.

With both sides maintaining firm positions but continuing communication, the situation remains tense, and the coming days are expected to be crucial.
