Iran Launches Strikes Against Anti-Iranian Terrorist Groups in Iraq and Syria

Iran has launched strikes on a spy headquarters and anti-Iranian terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria, following missile attacks near the US consulate in Irbil.

In a significant development, Iran announced late on Monday that it had launched strikes against a spy headquarters and the gathering of anti-Iranian terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria. This announcement came shortly after missiles hit an area near the US consulate in Irbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region.

Irans Retaliatory Strikes: Targeting Anti-Iranian Elements in Iraq and Syria

Strikes Target Terrorist Operations and Alleged Mossad Headquarters

According to a statement from Iran's Revolutionary Guards on state media, the strikes were aimed at terrorist operations, including Islamic State targets in Syria. The statement claimed that a number of ballistic missiles were fired, successfully destroying these targets. Additionally, another statement asserted that a headquarters of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, was hit in the Kurdish region of Iraq.

Context of Recent Attacks

These strikes come amid heightened tensions in the region. Earlier this month, the Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for two suicide bombings targeting a commemoration for an Iranian general slain in a 2020 US drone strike. The attack in Kerman resulted in the deaths of at least 84 people and injuries to 284 others during a ceremony honouring Revolutionary Guard General Qassem Soleimani.

Furthermore, last month, Iran accused Israel of killing a high-ranking Iranian general, Seyed Razi Mousavi, in an airstrike on a Damascus neighbourhood.

Details of the Strikes in Irbil

An Iraqi security official confirmed that Irbil was targeted with several ballistic missiles, but did not provide further details. An official from an Iranian-backed Iraqi militia disclosed that 10 missiles fell in the vicinity of the US consulate. According to this official, the missiles were launched by Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity, and there was no immediate information on any casualties.

US Response and Regional Implications

US officials were not immediately available for comment on the strike near the consulate. These strikes occur during a period of heightened tensions in the region, with concerns about a wider escalation of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq have launched frequent drone attacks on bases housing US forces in Iraq and Syria. These attacks are seen as retaliation for Washington's support of Israel and an attempt to pressure US troops to leave the region.

The strikes carried out by Iran in Iraq and Syria add to the already tense situation in the region. With ongoing conflicts and heightened tensions, the potential for further escalation remains a significant concern. As the situation continues to develop, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards de-escalation to prevent further violence and instability.
